Hi Designer Jeans
What a brilliant find on FindmyPast.Thankyou so much for alerting me and  I found it.

I did Latin at school many dcades ago and I cannot transcribe.  if you copy iit and send via private email  I do know someone who might be able to transcribe for us.

My son downloaded the Indenture document onto Ancestry.  It is quite useful to compare that and  John's will. Israel's brother.   One of his comments is as follows:
In addition to his "sonne" Israel, Thomas also lists his "daughters",  Ann Cotton, wife of Richard Cotton (or is it Calton?) and Elizabeth Lod.

This fits with John Cantrill's will where parts of his estate to his nephews John Cantrill son of Israel, and nephew John Cotton. John Cotton is his Aunt Ann's son!

There is another daughter for us to follow up on, Elizabeth Lod. She is mentioned twice and it looks like Lod but I am not sure about the 'd'.

I am inot convinced Lod is correct but am still investigating. What do you think it is?

My son now has ambitions to try to take the Cantrill line we share with you back further....More wwork...

Many thanks again. for an invaluable piece of information.

cheers, Marp

Hi

I think Ann is Calton or Colton https://www.freereg.org.uk/search_records/6219164af493fd7fc3056998/anne-cantrill-richard-coltan-marriage-derbyshire-ashover-1675-09-?locale=en

I also think it is Elizabeth Lee, the final e being written exactly the same as the final e in 'the'  This might be her? https://www.freereg.org.uk/search_records/682f49e48655746c65eeba64/elizabeth-cantrill-anthont-lee-marriage-derbyshire-alfreton-1668-05-12?locale=en

Thank you for offering to help with the latin document, I will download and email it to you

It would be wonderful to take the Cantrells back further but it will be difficult, there are lots of them in Derbyshire (and elsewhere)

Hi,  I have tried a number of times to ask people who learned Latin at school of elsewhere to translate the document. No luck!  This is a great shame.  The AI suggestion might be helpful.  Otherwise is there anyone on Rootschat who mightbe able to help?

.... Otherwise is there anyone on Rootschat who might be able to help?

There's a whole section dedicated to that sort of help, with several regulars who are skillful and generous at transcribing old Latin documents.

Hi Molly C

I know nothing about architecture, building or bricks in 17th century Derbyshire!  However I have been researching in the area for years and can't recall coming across a brick maker before.  I could find next to nothing on DRO searching by 'brick", this on NA https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/4a2b8ec6-c19c-40a1-af98-8ec6a1c46d7e and more generally https://www.heritagecrafts.org.uk/craft/brick-making/#:~:text=Historically%2C%20the%20clay%20would%20be,the%20shape%20of%20the%20brick. also https://www.derbyshire.gov.uk/site-elements/documents/pdf/environment/conservation/buildingmaterialsadvice/stone-slate-roofs-guidance-for-owners-of-historic-buildings.pdf  From which I deduce that whilst brick making may have been carried out in Derbyshire it was rarely documented?

Designer Jeans if you use FindMyPast and search their census category, type in Derbyshire and for the keyword, brick, it'll reveal brick makers in the area.
