Cousins family of Plaistow and Canning Town
« on: Wednesday 27 October 04 22:16 BST (UK) »
I've been unable to find my GGGrandfather  Alexander Young Cousins after 1881.

He was born 1841 in Scotland and married Ellen Weldon in Woolwich during 1872. He worked in a sugar refinery according to the 1881 census. After that I can find nothing.

His children are listed as being born in Plaistow; they lived in Barking Road and Mafeking Ave. Their names are Frances Margaret, Henry Charles and George W Cousins.

Henry died in Mexico in a shipping accident during 1914 and his wife and children emmigrated here to New Zealand.  George and Frances reamain a mystery to me, as does the remaining life of Alexander.

I searched the usual census sites with no luck. Can anyone please suggest what  further research I might be able to do to solve this problem?

Hi
What sort of shipping accident - was he with the Navy? if so check with them for records.
Was he a passenger going somewhere? again you could try checking passenger records.
Do you know why he was headed to Mexico? work? pleasure? that might tell you something.
When you say his wife and children emigrated - was that after his death and was it all 3 children?
Sorry - three hundred questions for you to think about - if you haven't already been there and done that.
Cheers from Oz,
Cougar

Hi Mark,

Welcome to Rootschat.

I don't have access to the images, but I have found Alexander Cousins and his family on the 1891 Census Index of West Ham.  I will give the reference and perhaps someone else can post the image.

Alexander Y. age 50, wife Ellen age 45, children Frances M. age 17,Henry C. age 15, George W. age 12, and Emma C. age 6 are to be found at RG12/1322 folio 113

I hope it helps you.

Interestingly, in 1881 this family lived 7 doors away from my gg grandparents in Sarah Street.  My lot had moved a bit further away by 1891.

Nell and Rick, I really big thanks. I was starting to think I'd never find them!! This gives me a big lead and also another great-aunt I didn't know about.

I'm very pleased I joined RootsChat.

Hi Cougar, Henry died on an oil tanker called the San Valerio, it was owned by the Eagle Oil Company I think. He suffocated, along with four others while trying to rescue a mate in a hold. They were buried in sand dunes at Tuxpam, Mexico.

I was trying to figure out who the other men who died were..

The oil company was absorbed by a larger company many years ago.

Not too many options I suspect.

Thanks again from NZ.

Hi againl, I've just searched for Ingal Street, but the only one I can find is in Plaistow, not Bethnal Green.

Plaistow makes sense, as that's where they're from, but am I confused over where Bethnal Green is?

Mark

Plaistow is in West Ham Registration district, Essex.  Bethnal Green is a London Registration District as well as being an area of East London.  This area of London isn't one that I can claim any expertise about I'm afraid.

I appreciate that the post is old but if the info is still required then

The Official No for the “SS San Valerio” is 135301
If you are positive of the year of death (1914) then the log book and crew agreement for that year which should give an account of the deaths in the ships log, should be in the Maritime History Archives, Memorial University Newfoundland Canada There are other years also some also exist at the TNA Kew (1914, & 1915)
