1841 census Hopton Neath
« on: Saturday 08 July 06 19:49 BST (UK) »
I am trying to help a friend with her Family history, we are trying to find out details about Thomas and Martha Hopton who were living in Neath town in 1841.   We have managed to trace them to St Pancras, London, after 1846, but would love to know anything about the family - there were eight children born from 1811 onwards, Joseph, Henry, Charles, John, George, Robert, Caroline and William.   Caroline should be aged thirteen in 1841, and William 11.   Any help would be very greatly appreciated.   What my friend would really like to know is where Thomas was married/born as there are no records of this in parish records for Neath, only all the childrens' baptisms.   Unfortunately, I don't think 1841 gives info on place born??

Hi Chris

1851 - HO107/1496 Folio 428  Page 33 ( could be 32 has been crossed out)

Address: 75 Drummond Street, St Pancras, Sommers Town Marylebone, Middlesex.

The 1851 gives Martha's place of birth as Marylebone, she is age 62 and widowed.  There are a number of death refs for Thomas between 1841 - 1851 on Freebmd.

She is Head of house, with son William age 21, timber render born Neath, Glamorgan and his Wife Sarah age 21 b Salisbury

There is no marriage for Thomas & Martha on Glam marriages up to 1837 so they likely did not marry there. There are no other Glam marriages listed for 'Hopton' either

Cas - thanks very much for replying.   We've been trying to confirm which Thomas Hopton is my friend's, and there's one in 1846 which looks the most promising.   I'm hoping to get to the Swansea Archives this week to search 1841 census, to find out the family's whereabouts in Neath, just a pity Thomas died before 1851 because that might have given us his birthplace.    Thanks to you we now have Martha's birthplace, so that will give us more to work with!! :)

Your earlier posts were quite a while back, and you may have made progress since then, but in case this is of use:

I can add a little more about Thomas HOPTON from the St Pancras marriage entry for his daughter Caroline, who married George Thomas PEARCE on 12 November 1845.  Thomas Hopton is described as a Game Keeper and there is no 'Deceased' beside his name.

Yet Thomas is not listed with Matha in the 1841 Census.  Martha was in St Pancras (Mary Street - now part of Stanhope Street) with their son George HOPTON (20 years old).

By the time of the Marriage of their son, William HOPTON, to Sarah Horner on 26 December 1850, in St Pancras, Thomas HOPTON was described (rather bluntly!) as dead.

George HOPTON and Family

Very glad that you saw my post and that it helped.  I am related distantly to this family (by marriage)  - if she looks on Ancestry she should see the tree entitled "MURRAY Family of London (and Waterford, Ireland)" which might add to the picture for her.  It would be good to share our research.

Have just done a little more research.  Thomas and Martha's son George HOPTON married Sarah GOODMAN on 20 December 1843, in St Pancras, London.  Thomas was described as "Dead".  [George was a Coach Maker living in Brill Cresent and his Bride lived Drummond Street (both in adresses in the St Pancras area].
