Shipwreck passenger list help: Koombana WA sank 1912
« on: Friday 07 July 06 13:57 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help?

I'm posting this on behalf of a friend who's great grandfather died in the sinking of the steamer Koombana of the coast of Western Australia near Broome.

She has found stories of the sinking and descriptions of the ship but she'd like to find a "those who perished list" or a passenger list for the ship.

http://www.museum.wa.gov.au/collections/maritime/march/shipwrecks/Wreckfinder/Koombana.htm

The ship sank on the 1st March 1912.  Can you suggest where she might find this info?  Do Australian newspapers list these things in detail do you reckon?  Or were passenger lists kept for coastal journeys?

The passenger's name was Clark.

Any help appreciated,
Pam

PS
you will have to go to page 72 to find the list you are searching for.  A person named Clark is certainly there.  It makes sad reading!

Wow Guys!  We really couldn't ask for more!  How fantastic that they've digitised the book!

My friend was searching for a picture and a list of those who perished for her mum.  This exceeds everything!

I'm sure she will "enjoy" looking through the book - though as you say it is a sad sad event.  And the memorial book is excellent, very touching.

Again, thank you very very much.  I can't wait fro Monday now to see my pal  ;D

All the best,
Pam

I found the archival material gravely disappointing.  Most of it deals with legislation and overseas compensation.  ??? ??? :'(

My great, great Uncle went down in the Koombana.  He is not listed among passengers, although he boarded at Geraldton.

I have people on this board to than for guiding me to an article in West Ancestor v 3 No 7 ;D

from this site  http://oceans1.customer.netspace.net.au/wa-wrecks.html

In 1973, the remains of a large vessel was found in deep water thirty-five kilometres off Eighty Mile Beach - prhaps they were of the Koombana, but the write site has not been positively identified. [LAH]

Hi Pam,
Sorry about the 3+year delay in spotting this.
I am writing on the disappearance of Koombana and have some information.
I will pull it together for you.
Annie
