MARTIN/MONTGOMERY...Belfast
« on: Friday 07 July 06 13:22 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone  :D
This looks like an amazing site. Can't wait to find some missing family in here!
My husbands family came from  22 Matilda St near Sandy Row, Belfast. I am looking for any connections to a Mary Agnes Vance who married (1st) Hugh Montgomery and (2nd) Hugh Martin. I believe Hugh's father was a Joseph Martin? I have nothing on Hugh Montgomery. Mary had the following siblings that I know of, Jean, Elizabeth, Ena, Richard (Dickie) and Ruby. I have been told that the name Johnston or Johnson is also in the family (a Thomasina (Lena) Johnston/Johnson), as too is the name Major but do not know how or where?
If anyone can help me with the above, my hubby would be eternally grateful.
Thank you
Karen Martin

Hello Karen,

I've just noticed that there are no dates mentioned in your message. If you could add a few dates that would give an idea when your ancestors lived in Belfast and when they left Belfast it would assist members willing to help you.

Christopher

Hi Christopher
Thank you for bringing this up again. Sorry for not getting back in here for awhile. Had problems with our computer. We have now got a new super dooper laptop.
As for dates etc on the Martin/Montgomery...Belfast family. The family are still in Belfast. Looking for anyone related to the them. Mary Vance born early c 1914 in Belfast. Parents to Mary are Thomasina (Ena) Johnston & Johnny Vance. Hugh Martin b 1903, parents are Joseph Martin & Maggie McCormish, possibly from the Disraili Steet area? I don't have anything on Mary's 1st husband Hugh Montgomery.
I hope this helps re anyone researching the same names.
Regards
Karen

Hi RosemaryJoan
No I did not have that info, thank you very, very much for going to the trouble of finding it for me. I really appreciate it. It's the first piece of info I have received on this family that the Martin family did not have. What site is the Emerald Ancestors?
Kind Regards
Karen

Going through old posts and found this one - have you already found the information on this family that you were looking for earlier? Since then lots of Irish resources have come online.

1911 census shows family of Joseph and Maggie Martin with a son Hugh (age 8 )-
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Antrim/Shankill/Edenderry_Street/176663
And this looks to be the same family in 1901 census-
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Antrim/Shankhill/Howe_Street/948722

1911 census gives Maggie married 14 years with 5 children but older children are listed in 1901- perhaps Joseph was married twice.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hiya    I am not sure if there is a connection because I have almost NO information on my Belfast roots

What I found out today, that my grandfather, Alfred Wilson is buried in Belfast City Cemetary.     He was married to a Mary Vance and passed in 1944.

In the same grave I have learned that there is a James Martin buried, that passed in the 60;s.

I wonder if your Martin/Vances  are the same Vance's on my grandmother's side? Grandma was born around 1911,and I am aware of one brother, James Vance, and a sister Nellie (not sure if that is her proper name). Nellie married a Callahan....May have been in 1915 if her first name was really Ellen

Hiya back..
I don't have much info on the Vance line either. That name was given to me by hubby's sister in Belfast. They do not seem interested in following any line of research so have to pump them for info and get them to check it out with family. I will ask one of Hubby's sisters and see what she says re the names you have given me. I can't promise to get back to you sgtraight away though. We are traveling around Oz so all my files in storage and only have limited info with me. Put my family tree on to an external hard drive for safe keeping and do not intend to acccess it till we stop travelling...
Cheers for now
