GILBERT\GILBART - Phillack/Hayle area: Complete
« on: Sunday 02 July 06 22:57 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I would be really grateful for assistance with the above surnames.

My great great grandfather was born Philip Nicholas GILBERT in 1863 in CopperHouse, Hayle, Phillack.  He married a Charlotte JAMES in Birmingham in 1888, which is where they moved to. He was a steam engine fitter, and died in 1917 during WW1 in Calais, France.

I am getting really stuck on his parents and siblings. I seem to be going round and round in circles. Every time I think I find something relevant, I move to the next census. Then can't find links to the previous info I found, or find new interesting references that don't seem to link in with the original information.  Or even worse, can't find anything at all.  Arrgghhh ....

His father was also Philip GILBERT, and his mother was Jane GILBERT nee GILBERT (just to make life easier!)
Philip GILBERT was a builder/mason, according to the birth certificate I have for the Philip Nicholas GILBERT.

Any assistance/pointers/ideas would be wonderful.

Thank you in advance

From a totally confused Sarah

Hi Sarah, Welcome to Rootschat, We will see what we can do to help. I see Cal has already posted the 1871 census RG10/2327 Folio 66 Page 50 for you. Can you tell us where the problem lies. Is it with trying to tie up the Parents in the earlier Censuses? Have you seen the Phillack and Hayle website where the OPC has a lot of records transcribed. (Looks like Philips baptism may be transcribed as Philippa   ;) )

Hi Cal, Kris, and Gougy,

Thank you so much for responding to me.
The references you have found look really promising.  I am going to investigate these further.  So many variations on the spelling of the surname is probably what is causing me to scratch my head, and miss things.

I did find an 1881 reference for Annie, Margaret, and Philip (no parents, which is strange, so maybe Philip and Jane died between 1871 and 1881).  In that census Philip was transcribed as a mason born 1863 ... maybe he later changed profession to a steam engine fitter.

I will look at the Phillipa Gilbert baptism ... I am ashamed to admit I discarded it previously ... thought it was a girl.
I also looked for the marriage of Philip and Jane, which I can't seem to find.  Do you have any ideas there for me?

Thank you again.    :)
