Please can anyone help!!
Is there anyone out there who has a JESSIE BROWN in their family tree, please?
This JESSIE BROWN was born around 1918-19, probably in Scotland.  She lived in England (Hertfordshire and London) definitely from sometime in 1938 till sometime in 1940.  She worked as a domestic servant.  I have been unable to trace her after this time, and because of the war there are not many records.  I have been trying to place this JESSIE BROWN for many years without success, but somone must have her in their tree!!!
  Thankyou for any help.

Hi there,

I don't have a Jessie Brown in my tree, but I can maybe offer some tips on searching for her.  Jessie, rather than being a name in its own right, is often used by people called Janet (possibly also Jean or Jane) so searching for one of these first names may help.

However, it will still be a very common name.  Do you have the names of her parents to help you narrow things down a little?

Cheers,
Clare
ELLIOT, CROZIER, HAY, AITCHISON, COWAN - Roxburghshire
BETT - Kinross-shire, Fife and Glasgow
CHAMBERS, BRUFF, WESTMACOTT - Glasgow
And many, many more...

Thankyou Clare.
I'm afraid I don't know any other information about this JESSIE BROWN, except she lived in the Watford area of Hertfordshire around 1938-40, and also lived briefly? in London..  The last I know is that she stayed in Watford overnight because she couldn't get home because of the air raids/bombings.  (There were heavy bombings on London around this time and possibly the trains wouldn't be able to run???)
A document that she signed was in the name Jessie Brown, but I realize that that doesn't necessarily mean that Jessie was her given name.
Her daughter was named Moira Elizabeth, however, I don't think anyone ever knew about the child.
I don't know Jessie's parent's names.  This is why I am hoping that someone may locate her in their family tree.
Any help at all is appreciated.  Thankyou.

Are we to infer that the only information you actually have about her is her daughter's birth certificate?

Or how do you know that she stayed in Watford overnight because of the bombing?
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Is this her?:
Moira E Brown
Mother's Maiden Surname: Brown
Date of Registration: Oct Nov Dec 1938
Registration district: Paddington
Registration county: Greater London
Volume Number: 1a
Page Number: 91

This is an interesting puzzle. Can you tell us anything more about these people? Any tiny little thing may help.

At any time do you know the names of anyone that Jessie was living with? I was wondering if they may have had a telephone. (I found someone I was searching for in the 1940's in the phone directory  ;))

Did Jessie ever marry? Did she have any other children? (I'm wondering if you can find out more about her via her other children ...)

The posts by dawnhippo have brought this old post up (is what working dawnhippo?). Not sure if you have both noticed, Forfarian and Ruskie, but last posting on this was nearly 5 years ago....
