CAPONHURST: So where were they?

There I was, charging along at a giddy gallop and all pleased with myself... when suddenly
Alice Caponhurst of Grandborough/Granborough marries John Grace 7th July 1566. Jolly good show, but that's a strange name. Looked it up on the IGI and there are buckets of them. 
It appears Alice was christened in 1543, her father was Richard born 1522 and her mother Margaret.  Nice, I was on a roll, I kept going. Richard's father was Rycharde born circa 1500.
By this time I thought I was invincible.
There were more of them but going by the name of CapEnhurst, in Cheshire, unsurprisingly around Capenhurst, so this is probably where the family came from.
All I had to do was join them together.....

The last one on the Cheshire list is born 1375....the first one of mine in Grandborough, circa 1500.

There are odd ones dotted about the place, but I can't find Rycharde or anyone I can even lay a tentative claim to.
It's so  knowing that if I could join them up I could be back another couple of hundred years.

They didn't have holidays on Planet Zog, lasting a hundred years or so, in those days did they? Perhaps they were abducted by aliens.

    

So come on you Caponhursts, where were you? Anyone got any suggestions what might have happend to them?

'In 1538 Thomas cromwell ordered that each parish should keep a register of baptisms, marriages and burials. In 1598 The Provincial Constitution of Canterbury required that the registers should be of parchment. All previous entries - which had ususally been written on paper - had first to be copied up - particularly those since the accession of Queen Elizabeth. this is the reason why so many registers commence in 1558, the previous registers having become unreadable though damp and decay.'

The IGI is an index of some parish registers of baptisms and marriages and many entries that are often pure guesswork by Mormon church members, a few of whom determinely trace their trees back to Adam and Eve.

The Grandborough parish registers are unusual in their survival and begin as early 1538 (when many others with Caponhursts in them will have been lost) so what evidence is there pre the start of Grandborough parish registers that Richard Caponhurst's father was also called Richard Caponhurst and he was born in Grandborough circa 1500 and what evidence is there for Capenhurst births in Cheshire in 1375? (I don't doubt there very well might have been births there but what is the evidence for them?) What sources and documents are being used to evidence the information given by church members and others who have entered their own submissions on the IGI index?

Agree with you about the IGI, Valda. This is why I always start off with them and then check everything on the parish records.
I've only managed to trace the marriage of Alice and John Grace, so far. That's for real. Grandborough marriages goes back to 1538 Her sister Elizabeth and brother Thomas are also recorded there as being married.
Now I have taken Richard on trust as they seem to have Alice, Elizabeth and Thomas right, but I am sceptical about Rycharde. As for the ones further back in Capenhurst, weeeeeellll, (big sucking of teeth) I haven't tried to find them yet. In any case, I have to find Rycharde and then the missing link first.
At present I am having a bad enough time in Hampshire, but one day. ONE day, I have promised myself, I'll get onto the Capenhursts.
I was just hoping someone out there has found out something that would speed me on my way.....

This could be the help I need. When I can get a few minutes peace, and it's blue murder here with family at the minute, I'll certainly give Faith a call.

I did just that, Gillymay, and Faith and I now have our heads down together seeing what we can see.
I have also made another contact who has sent me excerpts from the wills of Rycharde, Richard and Margaret his wife, which prove Alice was the daughter of Richard, and Richard was the son of Rycharde. So everything I had, but had not 'legalised' (my term for proving for myself) has come through.
Pretty darned pleased over that.
Pity I can't get any further back, but I guess if the chap dies a father of half a dozen kids in 1558, that takes me pretty near a birth in 1500.
But why are we never satisfied? I wonder who HIS father was.................
