help with burials please

I've just checked out this site:

It has MIs for Canonbie Church Yard but there are no Rodger/Roger/Rogers, etc. I think you'll need to consult old lair books for Violet.

Hi Gadget, sorry if I sound totally stupid but what are Lair Books and what might they bring up, would it be Dumfries and Galloway County Council I would have to contact?

Sorry about not explaining -my fault. Once upon a time I didn't know about them either 

Lair books are lists of graveyard plots allocation/ownership. These are probably the only way of finding out where an ancestor is buried if there is no monument. The local council hold them

It might also be worth contacting D & G Family History Society to find what they have.

Getting back to your prob, could you post the details of their whereabouts and children on the 1841 and 1851 so that I can build a picture, please.

I've just spent 3/4 hour looking for Andrew's death, 1861 - 1887. There is no one who fits any variations that I can find at all. Nothing in England BMDs either that seems to fit.

I note that in the 1871 Violet has reverted to her maiden name of Rae, although down as married. At the moment I can only deduce from all the material that Andrew has either died - maybe as 'unknown' or very badly mistranscribed - or they have split up for some reason.

When James married  Jane Amstrong in 1864 in Canonbie, Andrew is not listed as deceased, so we must assume that he lived at least until 18 November 1864.

I'm at a loss to explain it all 

As he is with James and daughter Joan/Johan in the 1861, could she have married and Andrew was living with her - have you followed her and all the other children up?

One line to take is to follow up the marriages of all the children to find when or if Andrew becomes listed as deceased.

You asked me about burial records in Eng and Wales. There are the official death registrations from 1837 onwards on Ancestry and 1837online and burial records for individual parishes - some of these have been transcribed and are available for online searching at familyhistoryonline or as a set of CDs (National Burial Index). Much of this is also available to order on film,etc. from local LDS FH Centres. Not full coverage though. There are also some transcriptions available on line or via Family History Societies. It's all very varied and depends on the areas you wish to look at.

Hi Gadget, Thanks very much for all your help anyway, I noticed on the surname list for the churchyard in Yarrow on the internet that there are Rodger's and Rae's there, do you think that is worth a try please, seeing that is where Andrew and Violet got married. I might also give these lair books a go and contact a couple of different county councils about it as a lot of my Scottish ancestry is from Roxburghshire as well.

It's certainly worth looking at Rodgers/Rae in Yarrow. Even if they're not the ones that you're looking for , they could be relatives or earlier ancestors.

Have a look at the Dumfries and Galloway Council Website

This will give you the telephone/e-mail of the relevant section for graves. I can't remember who I phoned but they put me through to the relevant person.

Have just seen your message of a few years ago re Andrew Rodger as I'm trying to get further back and am trying all Rodger links as in my tree I am back to 1700's and maybe find that all these other Rodgers had the same parents.   I am presuming that you are a descendent  of Andrew and Violet - you probably have all the info now but there are no records of burials for Canonbie before 1899 and the the publication re headstones is only up to 1855. The stone in Canonbie churchyard for his daughter-in-law Jane Armstrong is there - died 1904 and states wife of James Rodger, Todhillwood - he died in 1888.   Some of Andrew and Violet's family went abroad - New Zealand I think and I wondered if Andrew had went there.   I am waiting for a plan of canonbie and will be visiting their in the spring to look to see if there are any other stones.

Have just found Andrew Rodger in 1871 census at Puslinch, Wellington South, Ontario with son Robert and daughter Joann and a James Leith Rogers but do not know who he can be! as son James was in Scotland - also his son Rutherford with wife and family including a dau named Violet.   Andrew is marked as married so obviously took family to canada for a better life.   Found his death at same place on 14 October 1872 stated married (as Violet did not die until 1887)and Farmer but by this time parents weren't on DCs in Canada.     So will not be able to know who his parents are.   I do have a database of all Rodgers in he Borders but it is difficult to join up back in the 1700s.    The only hope is that on of his descendents will know.    I have all his family so maybe should post this on notice boards although you may have already done so.
