help with burials please
« on: Friday 30 June 06 19:10 BST (UK) »
Hi, please would it be possible for anyone to help me find the burials of 2 of my ancestors in Dumfriesshire, the first is a Violet Rodger nee Rae who died in 1887 in Canonbie, if I am able to find her I am also hoping to find her husband Andrew Rodger, he is a bit of a dark horse as I and others have never been able to find his death certificate anywhere and the last census entry he was traced on was the 1861 at Fiddleton Toll Bar, Dumfries. Violet is also a widow when she dies in 1887.

Would be very grateful for any help anybody is able to give me.

Thanks

Hi Anna

Have you located Violet  in the 1871.? In trying to find more info on them, I find that she is already a widow by 1881, living with son James iin Canonbie. Both she and her son (aged 53) were born Yarrow, Selkirk. Andrew therefore must have died 1861 -1881, aged 59 -79.

Could they have been in one of the English border counties in the 1871 or when he died as Andrew was a shepherd?

Hi Gadget, at the 1871 Violet was visiting her son James at Broomhomeknowe, Langholm, Andrew isn't present, Violet is just down as being married, not a widow.

Would be very grateful for any help you are able to give me.

Thanks

This is very strange  ??? I noticed that in the1861, Andrew was with James and younger sister, Jane. Did Violet and Andrew ever get together, I ask  ??? I'll have a detailed  look later this evening. We should now concentrate on 1871 to 1881, I think.

Regarding Violet's burial place - I would have thought it would be in the Canonbie area but, as they were not 'well off'', it's likely that she didn't have an MI, immediately anyway. Mine were like that. Have you checked with the local council for lair lists around that time?

Hi, I have a copy of Andrew and Violet's marriage entry so they definitley were married and they were living together as a family with their kids at the 1841 and 1851, it just seems to go a bit to pot after that. Violet was living at Todhillwood Cottage, Canonbie in 1881, again with her son James, will have to check her out on the 1861 though as I don't seem to have a copy of that. Will get back to you.

I couldn't find her on the 1861 either  ???  Do you have a record of any parents' names for Andrew - it says born  Peebleshire, Troquair on the 1861.

Hi Gadget, on the 1861 Violet is living at 53, Channel Street, Galashiels. She is aged 55, born in Teviothead and is down as being a seamstress, what does that mean, living in different places, could it just have been to do with Andrew being a shepherd or did it mean the worst had happened (they'd split up). I have found an Andrew Rodger baptised 1798 in Troquair but am really wanting to find his burial to see if the age matches up.

The only death for an Andrew that I've found so far is one in 1872 but this one is a pauper, previouslu a  frame work knitter, widower of Helen Pinkerson, in Wilton, Roxburghshire. I don't think this is him.

I'm wondering if these are two families that are getting mixed up. Why would Violet be in Galashiels  ???

Will get back to you later.

Hi, another reason for me thinking the Violet at the 1861 is mine is that Teviothead is a place she used on other censuses as a place of birth, but... .Am very grateful for any help you are able to give me though.
