Hi Janice,

Poster 'kalbarri' has posted on the One Name Board (not quite the right place) about Isaac ELDER.  See:

I have alerted this poster to your correspondence.

Wow!  How do you do that so fast?  We have been stuck with this side for so long, and now everything is starting to fall into place. I really appreciate everything you are doing.

Hi Fern123

Back Creek was more than likely an area of Bendigo back in the gold digging era.

Maud Winifred's death in 1858 (aged 5months) give her place of birth as Bendigo.

Gennig,
From your reply, I gather you found a death for Maud Winifred WILLIAMS at Back Creek - Bendigo? Did you have a date? Seems she must have died at same time as her mother as she died in April 1858 I shall have to investigate further
Thanks for your help

Spurred on by Genni's post, I went Googling - and, as might be expected, there were many places called Back Creek (one significant central Victorian gold mining site was a Back Creek which was later re-named Talbot).

However, as Genni said, the relevant Back Creek was surely close to, or in, Bendigo given that 'Bend' is given as baby Maud's birthplace on her death entry.

I found the following:
http://www.trove.net/AULG0001/AULG0001_021017.html

It is a view (small!) of "the Sandhurst cemetery at Back Creek" - Sandhurst being an earlier name for Bendigo.

From the Cemeteries site provided by Genni, it seems that it is now the Bendigo Public Cemetery.  Here is a quote from that site at:
http://www.bencemtrust.com.au/Bendigo_Cemetery.htm
"The first registered burial was that of Ellen Mowbray Murphy on February 1st 1858 age 3˝ years. This cemetery has also been known as the Back Creek and Sandhurst Cemeteries (not to be confused with the Sandhurst Burial ground in Bridge Street)."

Regards,

JAP
