Re: Australian Lookups offer - Flaherty

How incredibly gracious of you to make such a kind offer.  I'm sure you are inundated at the moment, but when you have an opportunity and are so inclined, I'm interested in picking up the trail of Thomas Flaherty, of Co. Limerick, Ireland, who, in 1852  was sentenced to 14 years transportation for "cow stealing."

Hi Marykk

According to the following website - Thomas Flaherty was transported on the 'Rodney' November 1852.
http://www.nationalarchives.ie/topics/transportation/search01.html

The 'Rodney' arrived VDL (Tasmania) 12th February 1853.  Left from Cork 24th November, 1852.  It had 342 convicts on board. 339 of them made it to VDL.

The following website may be of some help.

Cheers
Genni

Thank you, Genni.
Now the question becomes whether Tasmania Tom is also NSW Tom.  Funny how every answer leads to another question, but that's half the fun.

On the AVRI there are only 3 mentions of a Thomas Flaherty in Tasmania - a birth in 1871 (father Michael - so not yours), a marriage in 1897 which is probably the same Thomas, and a death in 1895 which could be yours - sadly the parents are not given, which usually means the informant of the death didn't know the parents.

Name - Catchpole

Mr., Mrs, and child 4yrs arrived in Aust. on the Marmosa in1914.  Their ages are right to be "MINE", but I hope for more evidence and wonder whether you could search a little for me.

The names I seek are
Mr. Frederick William Catchpole (Husband)
Mrs Clara Catchpole (nee Parret. b. 19/11/1875 London)(Wife)
Frederick (probably) Catchpole b. 1909 West Ham (Child)

They had extended famly living in Melbourne, so this is a likely spot,  But my attempts at searching the PO directories has not been successful.

Pehaps an entry of a  death or the birth of another child would give confirmation if it IS them.  I hope this is not too big a task.  With Thanks.  Sue

Thank you very much, Laverdiere

Hi Maggie,

I've checked the NSW BDM for your Mary EID {plus variations} and there is no sign of her there.
She is not listed as an incoming passenger to NSW either.

On the Australian Vital Records I found the only entry that could possibly be her.
Mary Jane EAD married Mountain Richard HILL, 1888, in Craigie, Victoria, Australia.

However, whether this is your Mary or not, I have no idea.

Cheers
Geoff
