Hi,
My G G G Grandparents George and Jane Watson lived in Salter Close in the Lynesack/Softley area, does anyone happen to know where it was/is please?

1851 - Lynesack and Softley became a separate Parish from Hamsterley and the 8 members representing Butterknowle at the Hamsterley Parish Vestry - the forerunner to the Parish Councils - formed a Parish Vestry at Lynesack, this remained as the form of Local Government until 1872, the authority responsible for the maintenance of roads, the church fabric and the making of rates, the vicar being the ex-officio chairman of the vestry and the annual Parish Meeting.

THE somnolent parish of Lynesack and Softley, of which few may hitherto have heard, comprises the west Durham village of Butterknowle and sundry hamlets thereabouts

If you go to multimap and look for Butterknowle, then by repeatedly zooming in you will see Lynesack just to the west of Butterknowle.

Thank you both, that was lots of unexpected information. My cousin and are gathering as much information as we can before spending a day going to Durham archives. I loved the photo and fancy bits, (skills still to learn).
