BUCKLAND of Donyatt
« on: Monday 26 June 06 21:07 BST (UK) »
I have a Harriet Buckland b. 1802 in Donyatt, Harriet married John Long, baker in Chard. I think her father is Joseph Buckland, Baker in Chard mother Elanor Harris, anyone have a baptism? I am wondering if there is a link with the Bucklands at Hornsbury Mill? , coincidently William Long is Gatekeeper at Hornsbury 1841???

Greatfull of any assistance

Sorry, can't help on the BUCKLANDS of Donyatt but there appear to have been several bakers named LONG in Chard and Combe St Nicholas.

Do you have a likely birth year for John LONG?  If circa 1803 he may be the son of William/Susannah, Miller & Baker of Wadford [CSN] whose son William junr aged 30 was recorded a Baker with wife Sarah 35 and children Amelia 6, Charles 3 and Simeon 2 at Old Chard in 1841.  My interest is in their F-S Ann DEAN aged 12.

Hi

John's birth is noted as 1803 at Combe St. Somerset, 1841, Finsbury, in 1851 he is in Little Charles Place in St.Pancras, 1861 he's in Finsbury - birth as being in Chard, again a baker, with Harriet.

Hi Toby
William LONG (sgd) and Susannah FOLLETT (made her mark x) both otp were married at CSN by Banns on 06 Apr 1803 before witnesses William CRABB and Joan SPARK, who both provided signatures.  [Joan DEAN had married James SPARK, Blacksmith, at CSN in 1784, so the LONG and DEAN families were associated for well over half a century when Ann DEAN appeared in the 1841 Census return of Wm LONG junr.]
I don't know the marital status of William LONG senr in 1803 as there is also a CSN marriage on 20 Nov 1796 to Ann MANSFIELD and they suffered an infant mort of son Wm in Mar 1799 and their 2nd[?] child Ann was bap 26 Jul 1801.  There are no subsequent baptisms to Wm/Ann but neither have I traced burials for either Ann.

CSN Baptisms of the issue of William & Susannah LONG of Wadford, Baker:
12 Jun 1803 John
06 Jan 1805 Mary
18 Mar 1810 William
07 Jun 1812 Amelia born 12 May 1812
20 Mar 1814 Hannah
14 Apr 1816 Simeon
05 Oct 1817 Elizabeth (private)
26 Sep 1819 Joshua
21 Oct 1821 Daniel

The last four children are still with the parents in 1841 + Ann aged 25 [possibly baptised Hannah?]

There is a CSN burial 31 Oct 1843 for 'Susan' LONG aged 63 of Wadford but I've not found a burial for William senr who was recorded aged 58 in 1841.

It's a pleasure!

There is a burial at CSN on June 11th 1870 of a William LONG of Wadeford but on the PR microfiche his age appears as 8 years.    However, the pen's flow of ink appears impaired on the 'y' of years, so it's possible a second digit [the '7' of 87?] has not reproduced in the filming.
FreeBMD gives an entry in Chard Registration District that Quarter of William LONG aged 87.

Hi Toby,

I'm unsure if I can be of any further help! Like Dee-jay I strive to be an expert on the folks of Combe St Nicholas and I see that William Long 1782-1870 appears in my "Combe cousins-of-cousins" file. I have no blood connection, but if you were to contact me on jennydotdavis at zendotco dotuk I could put you in touch with at least one correspondant who is a direct descendant of William.

I believe William 1782 was s/o John & Susan nee Hockey.

In my studies of Combe folks and their descendants I have almost nothing on your John Long bc.1803. Nothing more than his baptism date, for which I have 12 Jun 1803, the same as given by Dee-jay. Perhaps you could fill-in some details of his family for me?

Cheers,
Jenny
