BOTTERILL
« on: Tuesday 26 October 04 13:25 BST (UK) »
I am researching the BOTTERILLs from Biddlesden and surrounding areas. The women seem to have been lacemakers and the men agricultural labourers. . My grandfather was William BOTTERILL  born Biddlesden, 1860 whose parents were William BOTTERILL and Matilda HODGES and grandparents William BOTTERILL and Elizabeth SUMMERS.

Hello Kathryn,

I have just started looking at my husbands family and with information given to me  by one of his aunties tried to track them all down.  My husbands great grandfather was Frederick Botterill married to Eliza Minards, I have him as brother to your William.
By process of elimination I worked out that Matilda was a Hodges but didn't have definite proof so was happy to see from you message that I had got this right.  I am assuming that Milton where she was born is now Milton Malsor which I live very close to and travel through regularly.  I hope this is the case as I have been doing my side of the family and found them to be all over the country, so it would be nice to do research in the place where I live.   Where do you live?
Anyway it would be great to here from you and see what information you have.

Kind regards

Kerrie

Hi Kerrie

So nice to meet a fellow BOTTERILL researcher of the same family. You are the first in the 4 years I have been doing family research!

I live in the Middle East, and have done for the last 5 years. I am South African by birth and this was where William BOTTERILL went as a young lad when he went out to fight in the Zulu War in 1879. I have his papers from Kew and he lied about his age to get into the army claiming that he was 18 , when in fact he was only 17!

He not only fought in the Zulu War, but lived to fight in the Boer War as well. After that, he settled down in a small town outside of Durban about 200 kms inland called Pietermaritzburg.

I know a lot more about him than I did 2 years ago, but certainly not as much as I would like. However I do have the names of his children and their spouses. If you give me your personal e-mail I can send you these. I was also in London in August where I found the Parish records for Biddlesden and found his siblings and others which I will send you.

I would love to hear about your side and who they were and what they did. A branch totally new to me.

Many thanks for making contact. My email address is: kathrynbax@yahoo.com.au ( I have a house in Australia now).

Kathryn

Hello Botterill family!
I have had to clear my Father's house and have come across two antique Yorkshire Botterill family bibles, plus lots of their ephemera.  How they finished up on the Isle of Wight I will never know! 1876 is William, plus many other later names tucked inside, with photo, confirmation certificate, letter. etc.  1891 is LYNNE.  If these are of interest to you, please look on eBay 6968940087 and 6968936739.  It has really been interesting reading it all.  It would be nice if these treasures went back to the right home.
Kind regards,
Julie Ringer [julie25blue]

Hello Julie,

Thank you for letting me know, unfortunately it doesn't sound like my line, it would have been great if it was, I hope you find the rightful owner.

Hi Julie

This could be my Botterill family - I have them in the East Riding. Margaret Botterell born 1777 at Middleton on the Wolds is a direct ancestor.

Will do some checking !!

Hello

I saw your posting and thought I would find out if my Botterill is related in some way.

I have an Esther Botterill in my tree.  She was born in Quantin in 1789 and married Richard Garner (born 1789) in Waddesdon on 20 May 1810.  They had 9 children.  I'm not sure of her occupation but he was a shoemaker as were several of his sons.  Some of his daughters were lace makers.

If you can see a connection I would love to hear from you.

Regards

Hi Dette

I don't think your Esther is anything to do with me ... my lot seem firmly rooted in the East Riding of Yorkshire rather than Buckinghamshire. I've never heard of Quantin but presumably not too far from Waddesdon?

I am researching Margaret Botterill but there are 4 in the area and she could be any one of them. Margaret Botterill born Foston on the Wolds 1774, Margaret Botterill born Middleton on the Wolds 1777, Margaret Bothril born Middleton on the Wolds 1784 or Margaret Bothril born North Dalton 1780. So I'm stuck !  Anyone watching this topic with any ideas ?

Anyway - best of luck Dette

Hi Sue

Yes you are right, - Quantin isn't too far from Waddesdon.

I had no idea of any in Yorkshire but I notice you have Oughton in East Riding.  I am related to Autons from around Ripon (my grandmother was Sarah Auton daughter of Christopher Auton and Margaret Auton).  Could your Oughtons be in any way connected to Autons?
