Thanks alnat for putting in the time to look up those.

Well that's sorted, there is only one Beriah left from the 1841 census, that's the son of Richard and Jane born c1833. Although I can't find his birth or christening and he is too young. There is a Beriah born Dawley to Richard and Letitia christened Sept 1831 and he is the most likely.

According to a pedigree on LDS, Beriah, son of John and Rachel, born Old Park, Dawley emigrated with his family to the USA where his parents both died within a couple of years. His year of death is shown as 1907 in Utah.

I now think it unlkely that this Stirchley one is my Beriah as the place of birth would have been Stirchley not Old Park, although not too far it is definitely not Old Park, Dawley. I think it may be worth checking later censii.

1851 for the 'William and Elizabeth' Beriah, Dark Lane Row, Dawley

Elizabeth Baugh Head widow 49 born High Carell (Ercall?)
Sarah Baugh dau 22 Furnace Work born Stirchley
Beriah Baugh son 20 Collier born Dawley
Elizabeth Baugh dau Stone Mining born Dawley

So Beriah's birthplace is now Dawley!

1851 also at Dark Lane Row, Dawley

Richard Baugh Head 60 labourer born Dawley
Jane Baugh 50 Wife born Wellington
Beriah Baugh son 20 Stone Miner born Dawley
Emma Baugh dau 14 born Dawley
William Bailey son 20 coal miner born Dawley

The son with a different surname would suggest Ann was Richard's second wife.

There's a death of a Letitia Baugh aged 48, 13 Dec 1836 St Leonard Malinslee (NBI) so I would think this Beriah could be the son of Richard and Letitia. There's a marriage of Richard Baugh to Letitia Bailey 19 May 1816 (IGI M008591)

IGI (although only a member submitted record) has the baptism of a William Bailey, 6 Mar 1831 at Dawley. Parents were William Bailey and Jane (Corfield).
A William Bailey was buried at Holy Trinity, Dawley 19 June 1833 aged 32.

Maybe William Bailey senior was related to Letitia? Her brother? Richard Baugh may have married his sister-in-law Jane after they were both widowed?

Letitia Bailey (baptised 21 Jan 1790 per IGI) did have a brother called Beriah (bap. 23 Sep 1787) so this explains where the name came from.

Apologies if this has left you even more confused, get some certs ordered and then I can stop guessing LOL.

1861 at 85 Dark Lane Row

Beriah Baugh Head 29 coal Miner born Dawley
Ann Baugh Wife 31 born Dawley
Isiah son 6 born Dawley
Jane C 2 dau born Dawley
John H 5 months son born Dawley

Next door neighbour at number 84 is William Bailey 30, now married to a Mary A, with 3 children.

1861 78 Dark Lane Row

Beriah Baughn 30 Lodger miner born Dawley
Sarah Baughn 24 Wife born Dawley
William Baughn 10 months son born Dawley

Richard Baugh 69 and Jane Baugh 59 are living at number 59 Dark Lane Row, all their children have left home. They are now both born Dawley and are paupers.

Sorry but I can't find Elizabeth Baugh on the Census or find a possible death for her either.

Also found Beriah Baugh marriage, Mar 1851 Q Wellington 18 235. Possible partner was Sarah Ann BAILEY. The plot thickens...........................

Thank you so much alnat!
It will take me a while to digest this, I had the wrong Richard married to Letitia.
Interestingly, Rachel as per my last post (married John and went to the USA) was also a Bailey!
By the way, that's not the first Beriah, I have a Beriah Botevyl/Botfield born 1703 whose sister Agnes marries William Baugh in 1728 and they then use the name for their third son in 1741, the "original " Beriah Baugh!

Beriah at 85 Dark Lane is the one I am interested in, John H aged 5 months in 1861 was my great-grandfather.

I assume you mean Jane rather than Ann was Richards seond wife.

Beriah was born to Richard and Letitia ch.18th Sep 1831 Dawley Magna, that's where I started this post as I have two Beriahs born within a year living in the same row of cottages!

Alnat, I think you may have supplied the missing link!
That family living at 78 Dark Row is possibly the missing Beriah Baugh and wife Sarah (nee Willis)with son William, I have checked and there are no Beriah Baughns that I can find or even a family of that name. I really think that this is the one I have been looking for but I don't know where they go to after this.

Hello! I know I am somewhat late in joining the discussion, but I have been researching my partner John's family tree, and he and his mum Maureen are also decended from John H Baugh!

John and Mary Ann Baugh's daughter Annie married David Simmons (lodging with them in the 1901 census) and then moved to the Hemsworth area (West Yorkshire - specifically South Elmsall - in fact Maureen still lives in the area). David and Annie's son William (Bill) was Maureen's father and John's grandfather.

John H Baugh's parents were Brian/Beriah (born c1831 in Shropshire) and Mary Ann (born c1830 in Dawley Parish).  I think that Mary Ann's maiden name was Kenny/Kenney and she was the daughter of Thomas and Ann, who came from Galway. I'm still slightly puzzled as to who Beriah was decended from though (sounds like you've had the same problem!). Any further information would be gratefully received. I'm not sure what relation you would be to John and Maureen, but thought I'd find out! I tried to send a message to you but I wasn't able to and wasn't sure if it was the 'done thing' anyway (I'm new to all this - this is the first post I've made on here).

Hope to hear from you soon,

All the best,

Jenny Twomey, on behalf of John and Maureen Cocksedge

Hi Jenny,

Welcome to the forum, four years is a long time but not when we are going back hundreds!
The folk on here are very knowledgeable and have a good eye for spotting possible matches, I am sure you will find it invaluable.
I think you will find John H's parents were born later, John 1860 and Mary Ann c 1863 though I cannot find any record that matches her.

I have also sent you a PM.

Hi Sue,

Thanks for the PM. I have written a reply to you, but I can't send it as I need to make a minimum of 3 posts on here - this is my 2nd! I will add another post after this one, with details of how I found Mary Ann Kenny, in the hope that it will 'unlock' my messaging status.

All the best,

Jenny
