Gloucester post office embezzlement case 1888
« on: Sunday 25 June 06 20:29 BST (UK) »
I am researching a relative Alfred Edward Johnston born Glos 1868. He may be a black sheep!  I was told he was involved in some post office embezzlement case in about 1886 would there still be records.
Thanks
J

Hi J

Have you tried the Gloucester Record Office Genealogical Database?

http://www.gloucestershire.gov.uk/index.cfm?articleid=1348

Unfortunately it is down at present, so I don't know myself whether your man features.  It would be worth contacting the record office (or maybe someone is going there soon?) as they have newspaper records and gaol calendars which might cover the period you are seeking.

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Hi.  I have been twice in the last few days to the Glos RO but had not read your post befor going!  However, due to an op next week (12th July) I will be on enforced R&R for two weeks so will be pottering along there again.  I will make a note of these details and if you have anything else let me know and I will look it up for you where possible.

Thanks for replies Bugsy and Annie,

Yes please, to the first reply, if you could have a look while you are there, also best wishes for op.

Have tried looking on the Blacksheep, can't really understand this one and how to search, put in name and it just seems to list births etc on Ancestry .

Cheers
J

Hi

spent all afternoon at the records office and with the help of one of the archivists set about tracking down Alfred Edward Johnston and the Post Office story of 1886.  However, despite checking the card index on the Journal and Citizen under various topics could find nothing to narrow it down.  Checked the fiched copies of the Gaol Registers for 1886/87 but nothing there either.  Apart from trawling through pages and pages of the newspapers for a year or more I am at a standstill.  Do you have any other information for me to use?
