My missing Romany Boswell's
« on: Sunday 25 June 06 15:36 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone,
I have a family of Romany Boswell's (cornwall) who somehow have managed to evade most of the Census's
and I need a bit of help or guidance to find them. the information i have below is all I can come up with

Abraham & Unity 1861 census Twardreath ( then Unity disappears) Abraham no mention in the 1871 census, then he dies in 1874.

His son Ephraim c1820 appears to be in none of the census
and his wife Ann only appears in the 1901 census in the Helston workhouse.

Their daughters show up in the 1881 census, Unity & Agnes in cambourne, and Lilly in Phillack,  Unity in the 1891 census married now Unity Bailey ( died 1892).

Ephraim's sons Henry (died 1892) not in 1881 census &
Abraham appears in the 1891 census in Kent (was in prison) no census record for Abraham 1871, 1881, 1901, which perplexes me as he was married  in 1900 and living in Cornwall. also Ephraim & Ann had another daughter Beatrice Maria,  ( who went by the names Maria slack, or Maria Griffiths), but that's another puzzle, now I'm getting confused, any input would be greatly appreciated as I really dint know where to go from here,

Thanks colleen

Travellers may not have been recorded in earlier census, as it was not a requirement.

However, should you wish for anyone to try and help, then BIRTH YEARS and PLACES associated with each name would be needed.

Hi Colleen
Deb again...whilst researching my Penfold/Orchards i came to know of abraham Boswell, brother of Maria Boswell. As I mentioned in my other posts to your other query, the Boswells are not related by blood to me at all . I have also come across , with the help of another rootschatterer , a newspaper article concerning Abraham. He was in prison from the ealy 1880's. he was given a sentence of 20 years... therefore he had to be in prison somewhere during the 1881/91 and maybe even 1901 censuses. He was charged in Exeter...so maybe we have to start looking for him in Devon prisons.
what do you think?  :-\

Hello Osprey and Deb, Many Many Thanks for your input and information, its greatly appreciated.

Deb, I do have the cuttings of the court case of Abraham, they were kindly sent to me by a relative,  was sentenced in 1883 to 20 years, and its in the 1891 census you find him at Gillingham Kent Prison, he was released early, as he married Selina Lee 1900, in Heston.  but the 1891 census is the only one he appears in, but many thanks,  maybe we will find a family connection somewhere :)

Hi Osprey, I do have most of that information, these three Boswell families (Ephraim, Fesches, and Samuel) I believe are related, but trying to find the connection is the hard part, Ephraim never appears in a census & Fesches only in the 1861 census.
Also the Boswell's at Roche Carbis,  "oh for a name"
But thanks for the info on James & unity in Jersey, now that's intriguing, maybe a name change for Old Abraham, that's a little gem of info,  (maybe the whole lot of them had alias) that's why they are so hard to find?  I will certainly look into that, I cant thank you & Deb enough for your help & time, it is very much appreciated,
Regards Colleen.  :)

Hi Pauline Point taken, can only claim ignorance as a new rootschatter, also it can be a bit daunting posting it right :-[

Abraham Boswell   c1789 Dorset?
Unity                      c1790 Dorset?
Ephraim    "            c1824 Warwick
Ann           "            c1820 Ireland
Lilly           "            c1859 Taverstock
Maria        "             c1861 Cornwall
Agnes       "             1863 Cornwall?
Abraham   "             1865 Carvath St Austell
(only Abraham was registered at birth)

Regards Colleen

Hi Colleena

i know we have spoken of this before , but I can't for the life of me find the info I am looking for  ::)

You had mentioned that Maria Boswell called herself Maria SLACK too. Could you please tell me again, where, when  and who she was with when she was calling herself that ?

Thanks so much
