Chester baptism lookup 1904-1908
« on: Sunday 25 June 06 01:52 BST (UK) »
Could anybody be kind enough to look up my father's baptism record. He was born in Upton-by-Chester on 9 October. He always said his year of birth was 1908 but I am led to believe it could have been between 1904 and 1908.

Hi

There does not seem to be a James registered in the Chester area in that time frame, not one that jumps out anyway.

Do you know his parents names, did he have any brothers or sisters, who when and where did he marry and do you have a copy of his marriage certiticate ?

Hopefully someone should be able to help once we know we have the right chap.

As far as I know his grandparents were George Wiiliam Farrall (born 4.10.1859) and Caroline Ithell (born1861) who married on 14.12.1880 at St. Thomas's Chruch, St. Oswald's civil parish, Chester.
If this is correct then his aunts & uncles (George Wlliam's children) were:
George (1886-)
Albert (1887-)
James (1891-)
Maude (1881-)
May (1883-)
Lily (1884-)
Florence (1894-)
Beatrice (1896-)
Lily and Beatrice were my "aunts" - they never married and died in Blackley, Manchester, where they lived until the 1960's. The story is that they were my father's aunts in reality and that they brought him up. Hence uncertainty as to his actual parents. It is possible that his mother was a Farrall and that he took her surname or that she emigrated when he was young.
I have never been able to locate a birthe certificate.
His first marriage was to Marjorie Eileen Wade but I cannoit locate the marriage entry. The marriage would have almost certainly been in Cheshire or Lancashire.

Hi

Does he give a fathers name on his marriage certificate, I assume he married again after Marjorie Wade ?

It could be an impossible search with not knowing his birth name, or any of his parents names.

Could it be that one of his "aunts" was really his mother?

What happened to his other Aunts and uncles ?

Hello Peter
On his second marriage cert. his father's name is given as George William Farrall (as mentioned on my 1st message) but I rather think this was his grandfather. CERTAINLY George William is the father of the "aunts & uncles".
Yes it is quite possible that one of the "aunts" was his mother but I can't be certain. It also seems a possibility that the birth was not registered. I do know that he was confirmed at Upton by Chester and assume he was baptised there too (C of E). On his second marriage (to my mother) in 1950 he gave his age as 45, hence the doubt as to whether he was born in 1904 or 1908 (although he always claimed 9/10/1908 as his d.o.b.)

Hi

Could he have been registered as Farrell, there is a James born Manchester 4th qtr 1908.

Although he was confirmed and brought up in Chester he might have been born elswhere, often the case with unmarried mothers, which looks even more likely as he called his grandfather his father, I would be very suprised to find he was not registered, under one name or other.

regards
