South Shields - CROZIER - 1786
« on: Tuesday 26 October 04 06:05 BST (UK) »
Hi all

I have recently knocked down a 5 year brick wall and have found my gggggrandfather on an 1862 Census and am now trying to locate the parish and birth dates for William CROZIER who was born in 1786 (could be 22 March 1786 according to IGI) in Shields, County Durham and married on 6 May 1834 to Mary Ann NAPPER.

Since William is a common name in the Durham area, some clues are that his mother was possibly a GIBSON or a HOLMES, as his second son was named Gibson Napper Holmes Crozier. The Napper bit is his mother's maiden name, so GIBSON & HOLMES are strong possibilities. Although I suspect that HOLMES comes from the NAPPER side, as Mary Ann's sister was Louisa Holmes Napper. William's parents could have been a William & Mary. The IGI record is not a church record. I don't even know which parish church records to request. Another clue is that he had a cousin named Janet Jackson who lived in South Shields (this was from his will in 1864).

His older brother's name was William Robert.

Thanks
Tessa

Hi Minor

Just read your posting re William Crozier

I have a birth certificate for a Foster Armstrong born 1838 Saint Andrew Aukland. His parents were Thomas Armstrong and Ann Crozier. Do you know if William had a daughter Ann? It would seem possible as Foster is an unusual name to give a child.

Hi
You mention 1862 census.  I assume that is 1861.  Do you have them in 1851?   HO107 1501 F368 P62
15 Tollington Place? Islington
William Crozier 64 retired Master Mariner b Shields Durham
Mary Ann 44 b Sussex
Marion dau 12 b London
William Rbt so15             "
Gibson N H so 14          "
Philip? so 8                  "
plus 2 servants
Shields could be either North or South so you will need to check both parish registers - though it does say Durham so it should be South!
Did you really mean that his older brother is also called William?
The IGI record for 1876 in South Shields is a church record.  It quite clearly says "extracted record" and that means it was taken from a parish register.  It is the ones put on by LDS members that you need to treat with extra caution as they may be just a guess.
If you click on the batch number starting with P at the bottom and then search for surname Crozier it gives various other entries.
Have you searched the Lloyds Captains register at Kew?   Most Master Mariners underwent some sort of training and exams and the records are at Kew.
