1891 Census look-up (Marshall)
« on: Sunday 18 June 06 19:51 BST (UK) »
This line of my family completing is a mystery. it comes from my mothers father's side, unfortunatly he was an only child with both his sisters dying very young.

Ive checked out some information on 1901 census and have tracked down his father (my nan was at least able to tell me his parents and dates), unfortunatly they don't appear in 1881 census, why I don't know so what I want to do first off isgo back in each census list and track him that way.

In 1901 John Thos Marshall was aged 37 and living at 1 Ct 1 H Woodside Lane, Brightside Bierlow, Sheffield. His nearest church was Pitsmoor Christ Church.

John was born in Sheffield and worked as a Carter, the rest of his family were also born in Sheffield, except his Wife.

Martha was aged 38 and was born in Golgreave, Derbyshire. Between them they had 5 children:

1. Beatrice (aged 19) - Wrapper in silor Warehouse
2. John Samuel (15) - Errand Boy
3. William (13) - Errand Boy
4. Albert (9)
5. Ernest ( 8 )

Beatrice, John S and William would have all been in 1891 census that is why I would like to look there first. I should think that they will still be in the area of Brightside Bierlow but that is only an educated guess.

I would appriciate any help anyone can offer me.

It's possible that they weren't married in 1881, you will need the birth certificate of one of the children so that you can find out Martha's name and check their marriage.  Ooops sorry, I just noted that you have her name.

Thank you. it's a start. I've orded John Marshall's birth cirtificate (head of house) whilst I def know his wife was called Martha as I have some origional grave papers that prove this.

However on bmd ive found 3 marriages of a John Marshall to a Martha in Sheffield:

Q3 1873 - to Martha Bell
Q4 1881 - to Martha Hivings
Q3 1889 - to Martha Pugh

I think I can rule last one out as the name is John Henry, I think its likely to be the marriage in 1881, it seems to add up a bit more but doesn't prove a thing unless I def make sure.

By the way Beatrice's occupation is Wrapper in Silver Warehouse with the word Polisher crossed out as if they had decided to be a bit more specific.

I noticed that myself, could be Martha had an earlier marriage but not finding anything yet.

Good thought but id be very tempted to throw that theory out of the window. Martha was born in c1863 so come 1881 she would have been around 18, probably unlikely to have married before.

mmm... interesting, the 1901 census (online version) says Goulgreave - however they might had a a problem in transgribing. David do you have the census image avaiable, I would be interested to see for myself if possible please.

I've been checking out the name of the place as Youlgreave doesn't show up on www.streetmap.co.uk but if you try www.old-maps.co.uk it brings it up in Derbyshire.  Yes the place is clearly Youlgreave/Youlgrave on both censuses.

Where have you got the name Thorpe from?

You say you have ordered the birth certificate of John born 1864ish but how will you be certain that you have the correct John if you don't have his father's name? there are probably quite a few of them born in the right place at the right time.

Your first step I would have thought is to get the birth certificate of one of the children which will tell you Martha's name.  It seems to me that the easiest child to identify is

John Samuel Marshall December qtr 1885 Sheffield 9c 545

Hope this helps
