There were coal mines in the Westerleigh/Frampton Cotterell area until the 19th century.  When the South Wales mines expanded at that time, they were more economical than the Gloucestershire ones and a lot of miners moved to Wales as their prospects were better there.

More Alsops from Bristol to add to the collection!

Hi All!

Maybe it's just my ALSOPS but they are an elusive lot to pin down!.

My Gt Grandmother was Teresa Agnes Alsop b 1868 in Bristol.
daughter of William Francis Alsop, a Mariner (1827- 1876) born in Bristol & Mary Caroline Towells of Taunton.

William was son of  James Alsop (1782-1855) & Eliza nee ? (from Dublin)

I have not been able to verify where James was born other than in the 1841 Census he is born in Gloucestershire  - he was a cordwainer. I think he may be the James Alsop born in Coalpit Heath, Gloucestershire.

Beyond that I cannot find any earlier Alsops in my branch. However I have tracked down living relatives for all bar one of William Francis & Mary Towell's children.
