SUSSEX DAY!
« on: Friday 16 June 06 14:06 BST (UK) »
Heard this on the local radio - some chap from Chichester thinks we should have a 'Sussex Day' to celebrate all the wonderful things our County abounds in.  And what better day to choose than St Richards day the 16th June.

Here is a short biography of St Richard of Chichester.

Anyone else heard about this, what do you think?  I think it's a great idea  :D

What a great idea!

There is a lot which is great about Sussex and should be celebrated, some of our history, some of the historic places, customs etc

For instance how many people know that Stoolball was invented by Sussex milkmaids?

As a Chichester resident, though with no ancestry here, I'd vote for it!
I think Southern Counties Radio has an annual stoolball match ...

Funnily enough my family live at Punnetts Town, I don't think they still play stoolball.

In fact I don't think it gets played much these days.  Shame cause I really enjoyed it!

And the anthem for the day could be "Sussex by the Sea" !

I just had a google and would you beleive there is a National Stoolball Association !

For anyone who does not know the game here are the rules..
http://www.stoolball.co.uk/rules/article.php?item=4

Now in my day the boys would not have been seen dead playing this game, strictly girls only...they came to watch though  ::)  must have been the pleated skirts and white shirts that were the attraction.

Golly we had the same kit for playing then suey!!!

I think it was seen as a girl's alternative to Cricket in the days when ladies didn't run around quite so much - mind you they never saw me playing.  I never was a lady! ;D ;D
