Doyle - Dublin City

Hi
I'm trying to research a Doyle family from Dublin City and was hoping someone might be able to check for them in the 1851 census or a directory ?

This is what I have so far:
Margaret Doyle, born c1829, transported from Dublin City to Australia in October 1851.  Her convict records mention that her mother was Anne.  They also mention that her siblings were Catherine Mary Doyle and John Martin Doyle.
Since there's no mention of a father, I'm assuming Anne was a widow at the time  ???

I know the 1851 census for Dublin is listed by head of household only so I'm hoping Anne Doyle might show up as the head.  Then I'll have an area/parish to work with for burials etc.

It's all I can think of trying at this stage.   :)

Many thanks
Juliette

Hi Juliette,

You can access a number of Dublin directories online:

Shaw's Dublin Directory 1850:
http://www.dublin1850.com/dublin1850/index.html

Directories for 1824, 1842 and 1846:
http://www.failteromhat.com/index.htm

I had a look at the 1850 directory and found the following possibilities:

DOYLE
Anne, 34 Henry St (hosier)

Catherine, 225 Great Britain St (chandler)
Catherine, 21 Blackhall row (victualler)

John, 32 Lower Mount St (grocer)
John, 19 Upper Mecklenburgh St (occup not listed)
John, 58 Mary St (clothier)
John, 86 Lower Camden St (house smith)
John, 1 Dawson's circus (green grocer)
John, 24 East Essex St (tailor)
John, 15 Lower Summerhill (flour stores)
John, 3 Old Church St (provision dealer)
John, 25 Clarendon St (tailor)

Margaret, 24 Arran St East (straw bonnet maker) - but maybe your Margaret was too young to be mentioned in the 1850 directory?

There is no Anne Doyle mentioned in the 1842 directory so maybe her husband was still alive then? The only Doyle living in Henry Street in 1842 was William Doyle, house painter (2 Henry Street).

The 1846 directory lists Ann Doyle under Hosiers at 36 Henry Street. William Doyle still at 2 Henry Street in 1842 so I guess that rules him out as a possible husband.

Well, I don't know if any of this helps but hopefully you'll manage to gain something useful from one of the directories. Good luck with your research!

Best wishes,
Kirsten
