« on: Wednesday 14 June 06 21:22 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me identify Sameul Hilson born 1774 - where?
Having children 1801-1809 in Little Staughton with wife Martha
Buried Lt Staughton 1832
May be son of Thomas hilson buried Lt Staughton 1829 - aged78.
Any one suggest where they may be from?
Possibly Turvey??
Any help would be appreciated

Hello June

Sorry can't help you in this quest (as yet) but I can see the Samuel/Martha children on the IGI, one being John Hilson chr 1805 - who I have marrying Ann Marshall in 1829; & they had son Joseph 1847 Little Staughton.

Now Joseph married in 1879 an Eliza/Elizabeth Partridge b 1843 Eaton Socon, daughter of Thomas P, son of Jonathon P - whose brother Richard is my gt-gt-grandfather.

I'm going to library Saturday morning & I'll checkout Hilsons on the Little Staughton / Turvey PRs.

Regards John

Virtually all of Beds pre 1812 has been extracted onto the IGI, so the fact that Thomas and  Samuel's baptisms are not to be found suggests they were either con-conformist or that they were out of county. That there doesn't seem to be a marriage either for Samuel and Martha makes me think they were from another county. I've checked Hunts Marriage Index but there's nothing there - there were Hilsons in Hunts though, and that seemed the most obvious county. But there were some Hilsons in Northants - Higham Ferrers - and, like Hunts, that county is poorly covered on the IGI.

I'd try posting a request on the Northants board for a look up in the Northants Marriage Index to see if they are there.

There was also a Hilson family in neighbouring Pertenhall - it might be worth a bit of lateral research on this family to see where they were from to see if this throws up any clues

Regards

David

Thanks for replies. Joseph Hilson born 1847, son of John Hilson and Ann Marshall, was brother of my gt  grandmother Eliza Hilson born 1849. She married Joseph Bosworth 1867.
From replies it looks like the Hilsons are not from Beds or Hunts. I'll try a Northants marriage
Many thanks to both repliers

Hello June

The L.S. parish record has no birth / marriage of Samuel Hilson. You most likely know the christenings of children William Eliz, John, Ann, Thomas between 1801 - 1809.

As David said there is a family in Pertenhall, John & Mary Hilson with children Mary, George, Hannah, Ann, Eliz between 1803 - 1811.

There are no Hilsons in neighbouring Eaton Socon, Keysoe, Swineshead.

As to Turvey, there are Samuel Hilson & Ann; Thomas Hilson & Fra(nces) ne Tysoe; John Hilson & Joyce ne Lightfoot.

Sorry no clues as to origin of Samuel/Martha.

regards John

Thank you all for your trouble.
As one of you advised I asked Alan Clarke to check his Northants Marriage Index, and he came up with Samuel Hilson - soldier - married Martha Hardin 21/10/1799 at Higham Ferrers!
Another wall gone
Good Hunting and many thanks
