Tom Jones!!!!!

Hi

Does anyone know anything about the family tree of Tom Jones?? My in-laws insist they are related to him and that Tom's paternal grandfather was my husbands great grandads brother. I haven't been able to prove it one way or the other - which is driving me nuts as I'd like to end the stories once and for all!!! If they were related it would mean that Tom Jones's grandfather was born in Somerset, England.

Any help would be really appreciated as they are driving me nuts!

Friends of my parents are allegedly related to him and I can tell you that his real surname is not JONES - does this help?

I knew it wasn't Jones - as the family name of ours is Woodward - so that bit rings true!! Seemingly he used to visit my husbands great nan in Somerset when he was much younger, but that relative has died so I can't prove anything again!!!

I would take that with a large pinch of salt, unless you can find some real proof !

I lived in Pontypridd (his birthplace, Treforest, is part of Pontypridd) from 1964 - 1970  and almost everybody I met in that time either said that they were related to him (directly or by marriage) or that they "used to know him, when ... ", or went to school with him, or knew one of his ex-girlfriends, or ... or ... or ....

As a variation, if it wasn't themselves, it was the guy next door, a cousin, a friend etc, who .... see above

Oh I agree with you - but this has been going on since the 70's and they are deadly serious when it gets mentioned so I am determined to prove it one way or the other!!!! Then if it isnt true I can at last end it!!!!

Well, on Arranroots' link it says

so you can start working backwards from there ...

How about biographies ? They usually give some early family details, and you may be able to get them from the library, to cut down on costs.

Just looked around the web, but all I can see (so far) is variations of

Born Thomas Jones Woodward in Pontypridd, South Wales, Great Britain on June 7, 1940, ....

slightly more on this link i.e 1 sibling, but no (still) names for Mum and Dad

his father worked the coal mines of the Rhondda Valley, while his mother tended the house and the two children.

Bob, his father was Thomas Woodward  and his mother Freda Jones, both Pontypridd.

Its grandad Woodward I need the name of and where he was born!!! Seemingly he would have to be born in Somerset - a lot of the family went of to Wales and that matches my family tree - but can't get his grandfathers name anywhere!
