Mary,

So you have Robert Broderick on C1851, as a 10 yr old living on Sandy Island, Seaton Sluice. I notice he is recorded as born 'Earsdon', but he was probably born Seaton Sluice, with Earsdon as the 'parish' of his birth, which of course covered a wide area.

And just nearbye at Seaton Lodge, was widow Elizabeth Broderick, 69 yrs, sailor's wife, living by herself.

But I note that your 'holy grail' is the Registration of Robert's birth and his marriage.... !

Do you have his church baptism ?

Thank you for taking the time to reply.
1851 Census I have Robert as 10 year old living with father Edward in Seaton Deleval (birth place Earsdon)
1871 I have no Robert but Elizabeth with his children in Blue Bell yard Seaton Sluice she is down as mariners wife.
1881 I have them both in Market place Hartley. He is down as born in Seaton Sluice.
By 1891 Robert is a widower and living with family in Brick Row. birth place Earsdon
By 1901 he is still a widower in Brick row. birthplace Earsdon
I have seen the entry for Elizabeth Brotherick and know she is related but can`t understand how she is a widow and him a widower.I cant find birth certificate for Robert or Marriage certificate. Sorry this is long winded but this is all I have. I have my Grandfather Thomas bith certificate which gives Robert as father and Elizabeth formerly Bell as mother. I have no church records.
Any help would be much apprieciated. Mary

Mary,

Just getting ready for week end in Manchester... Sunderland are playing Millwall in FA Cup semi-final...

But in the meantime.... although I have a good hunch he was born in Seaton Sluice... as C1881 says. Whereas the reference to Earsdon is not a 'birthplace' but the 'ancient parish whose boundaries he was born in.

And Earsdon parish covered a big area, including Seaton Sluice, Old Hartley, New Hartley, Seaton Delaval, Seghill, Buuradon, Holywell etc...

My g/father was born in New Hartley.. but census records show him as b. Earsdon, birth registration records show Tynemouth .

I was born in Bebside Colliery village, but officials would have put me down as 'born Horton' which was our equivalent 'ancient parish'

Other examples are Wallsend-born people put down as 'born Longbenton.

And down in Co Durham , Seaham Harbour counted as ' Dalton-le-Dale.....   stop me !!!!

Anyway, that's my hunch for your Robert.

But one thing I am sure of.... C1851 has he and his family as living in 'Sandy Island' and not Seaton Delaval !!

Sandy Island ( isn't an island) is the bit of land on the north bank ( Blyth side ) of the river/stream/burn Seaton.  Near where the pub the Melton Constable is/was.

To read background/see maps/see photos of this area
go to communities.northumberland.gov.ukno'www' required.

Enter site, click on 'Seaton Sluice' and browse at leisure.

Another angle with your gang... that 69 yr old Elizabeth Broderick, widow of a sailor, on C1851... I think she is a contender 10 yr old Robert's grannie !

Next time I visit Northumberland County Records Office at Morpeth, I shall look up Earsdon parish records, for Robert's birth etc... was the family Church of England ?

Good Hunting

Michael,
You could be right about Elizabeth Broderick being his grannie. She was Elizabeth Brotherick nee Turnbull. Notice the name change  the only time I have seen it spelt Broderick was on the 1881 census L.D.S. site. I have covered the tynemouth Christ Church Records for marriage. Now looking at births. This takes time as I can only get to the family History centre once a week. Ive been to Morpeth but didn`t know what to look for. I found James a younger brother is Earsdon parish records but they started too late for Robert. Looked on ST Catherines no luck. I will be back in Northumberland I hope before the end of the year. Funny thing is my other family are Johnson and I thought they would be more difficult but I have done well with them. Cambois and Bedlington.  I have see Seaton Sluice on line and there is a church record with a  a mention of Robert Broderick at the very bottom of the page I think this was St Albins  or some thing like. There is also a Robert Brotherick on the site in the Militia List. I Dont know if they were C of E or methodist. If you get the chance to look at Morpeth I will be thank full but don`t put yourself out . It may be slow but I will get there. Hope Sunderland win and you don`t get too drunk.
Thanks again

Mary,

Picked up this info from N/C library on Saturday...

'Baptisms  earsdon Parish 1813-1837'

Edward Brotherick baptised 16/1/1819, parents Robert and Elizabeth .
Mary Broderick, baptised 16/1/1819, parents Robert and Elizabeth.

Robert Brotherick, baptised 14/7/1821, parents Robert and Elizabeth.

in the same era there was a couple, Robert and Margaret Brotherick also baptising chilren in the parish.

In the 1813-1837 period there were 3 B marriages..

John Brotherick married Mary Milburn on 26/3/1827.

John Hay Broderick married Jane Blakeman on 15/9/1833.

Mary Brotherick married George Smith on 20/7/1839

And 5 Brotherick burials and one Broderic..

Edward Brotherick, b.9/2/1820 aged 90 at Seaton Sluice.

Robert Brotherick, bu. 15/11/1821, 96 at Hartley.

Robert Brotherick, bu. 8/11/1829 73, at Hartley.

John Brotherick, bu.20/11/1832 79 at Hartley.

Robert Brotherick bu.19/10/1834, 50, at Seaton Sluice..

and Margeret BRODERIC, bu. 6/12/1815, 4 months at Blyth.

So that first bapt is Edward the sailor, who was 32 on C1851...

Bye for now,
Michael

Michael,
Edward and Robert and Mary the first baptisms mentioned are Brothers and sister. All born to Robert and Elizabeth Brotherick nee Turnbull. Robert (son born 1821) was a shoe maker who stayed in Seaton Sluice all his life. Married a Frances Grant.  Edward married Margaret Lane and it is this couple who I found on the 1851 census with first son Robert 10yrs old, who I Think is my Robert.  I have them on 1851 census at Seaton Lodge Seaton Deleval I have a marriage certificate for Edward and Margaret married Sept 1841. I have Edward their son born Sept 43 but no baptism or birth for Robert.  Now where is Robert??? You mentioned another couple batising children at this time this is why I need to prove Edward and Margaret are Roberts parents.  I now it is daft but I need to prove their Robert is my Robert.
Thanks for your help if there is any way I can repay the favour just ask

Mary, Thanks, but the challaenge is my reward..

Pendantic Michael would respond to you including 'Seaton Delaval' for Edward/Margaret's 'address' on Census 1851, by saying that if ever you wanted to see were they lived, you would not go near Seaton Delaval.

When you ask 'Where is Robert ? '... What do yopu mean ?.. He is there with his family, on the census page, aged 10, 4th memer of the family.

Anyone who is still interested I found Roberts Birth in 1841 which was not registered (Ithink) in the parish records of Earsdon. I found his marriage which again was not on the IGI in the Earsdon parish records.
It is nearly a year to the day that I first started to look for Robert
and thanks to Michael I eventually found him
