The suicide of Benoni Carter is reported in several newspapers in July 1861, though, curiously, none are local.
Freeman's Journal (Dublin) reports on July 17th 1861:
'Mr Benoni Carter, rent agent of Halifax committed suicide suddenly by cutting his throat. The unfortunate man was driven to distraction by the conduct of one of his clerks, who is in custody for forgery.'
