One more thought on Eliza, she may have died, or as often a woman in her circumstances did when they reached a certain age, she marry have remarried. Some lonely widower perhaps?. Unfortunately I will not be able to do any checking over the next few days but it's something to bear in mind.

Hi Jaywit,

Thanks for that. FreeBMD does show a marriage in the December Quarter of 1901 for Eliza but unfortunately I don't know which of the two gentlemen on the same record she married.

Enjoy your checking-free days.

Best wishes

Well well - my black sheep of an ancestor.  JBJ (as I call him for short) is my gggf.

He was married three times (and, in those days was a bigamist - since divorce was apparently by act of parliament).

His first wife was Elizabeth Stoyle (1841) married abt dec 1859 in plymouth. They had a daughter Eliza Roissetter (1860).

Maybe he didn't like babies - because he then married my gggm, Dorcas Odgers (ne. Dorcas Treloar[1832] - she was previously married to James Odgers) in 1864 in East Stonehouse, plymouth - I have a copy of both marriage certificates (she was also a bigamist and claimed not have have been married before on JBJs marriage certificate). Dorcas had a daughter (my ggm) Alice Jane Roissetter (1870).

JBJ didn't hang around! He married Eliza Lampen (1841) abt mar 1870 in totnes, devon. They stayed together until his death abt June 1899. This creates a certain ammount of confusion when reading the census - since there are now three eliza/elizabeth roissetters...

I have lots more information on JBJ (including his parents and some grandparents) and Dorcas (including her parents and siblings) and Alice - including a passport belonging to Dorcas Rossiter for Italy that has been kept in the family. I also have some photographs of Alice, who was a music hall singer and ran off with the leading man (according to family), leaving her children (including my grandmother) in the care of their father (my great grandfather).

I visited where JBJ used to live in Plymouth - lower street - the cobbled road remains, but the houses have long gone (some under a road and some under blocks of harbour front flats).

I also visited where Dorcas grew up in Stithians and have pictures of her home (Tregonning mill), where she was in 1841 with her father, William Treloar - Miller, and family.

Please contact me if you would like to know more.

OK - here is the whole history I have for John Barter Jordan Roissetter - my great great grandfather.  I have left off details for my great grandmother (alice rossiter) and his ancestors, to simplify things.

Cheers (and phew...)

-------

Born John Barter Jordan Roissetter in 1840 in plymouth (sorry - don't know the quarter).

I don't have an entry for 1841 census...

census1851. Named as John Roissetter (age 10). At 13 Lower Street, Plymouth. Scholar. There were 16 living in the house in four households. His father John Roissetter (age 30, Painter - Journeyman), mother Sarah (age 31) and younger brothers William (age 8), Robert (age 4), Edwin (age 3) and Charles (age 4 months). All were born in Plymouth.

December quarter 1859 Married Elizabeth Stoyle. (see freebmd - look for roissetter john)

census1861 at 21 lower street, plymouth. 25 or more in five households in house. Last Maker. In the household are maternal Grandfather (head of house), James Jordan (age 73, born Cornwall), a Shoe maker, maternal grandmother, Mary Jordan (age 68, born Devon, ?Hull?), aunt, Caroline Jordan (age 28, unmarried, born plymouth), and (almost certainly) his sister Elizabeth Rossetter (age 6, born plymouth). Named as Rossetter. Neither of his parents are in the household.

Also in census 1861, in the plymouth, in the household of Humprey Stoyle (born abt 1804, St Mellion, cornwall) and Elizabeth Stoyle (abt 1803, Torquay, devon) are Eliza Rosseter (abt 1841) - presumably his wife, and Eliza Rosseter (1860) - his daughter.

So John left his first wife and daughter - this pattern was to be repeated...

In 1864 John Roissetter marrried Dorcas Odgers. (I have the certificate for this)

In March quarter 1870 he married Eliza Lampen. (see freebmd).

Dorcas had a daughter, Alice, my great grandmother, in 1870 as well. It seems John decided not to stick around... Maybe he had something against babies.

I can provide more details of Alice - up till she ran off and left her 8 children with her husband - sounds like history repeating itself...

census1871, at 313 New North rd, Islington, London. He is a lodger in a house with Eliza Roissetter (age 30, also born in plymouth). Both are married. His occupation is Painter.

census1881, John (Ruessetter) is living at 43 King St., Lambeth, London, with Eliza Ruessetter (this is eliza lampen) wife. His occupation is now plumber.

Also in 1881, Eliza A Rosetter (Head, Widow,  age 40, Dressmaker) - this is Elizabeth Stoyle, lives at ?Cambridge street?, st andrews, plymouth, with Eliza A Rosetter (daughter, age 20, shop assistant).

I haven't found John in 1891 - I found an Eliza - but she is living with a William Roissetter - also a painter. Perhaps he decide to change his name?!

He died June quarter 1899 in Surrey. (see freebmd)

I realise this thread is incredibly old, but in case anyone is still interested in it, I have what I think is the 1841 census entry for John Roisetter. This topic has been very helpful to me, as I was trying to puzzle out the whole saga this evening. I would be happy to share info.

The 1841 census info (sorry I can't make out the street name, might be 25 Lower Street?) is Devon/Charles The Martyr/Charles The Martyr/District 9/pages 8 and 9.
James Jordan, age 50, Cordwainer; Mary Jordan, age 45; Eliz Jordan, age 15; and Caroline Jordan, age 12.
John Roissetter, age 20, Painter; Sarah Roissetter, age 20; John Roissetter, age 1; Mary Ratcliffe, age 5.

Not sure who Mary Ratcliffe is, as I've only just started searching into this branch of the tree, and I haven't run into any Ratcliffe's yet. I'm mostly interested in Alice Roissetter's lineage. Most frustratingly I can't find any birth records for her, but I do see a Mary Jane Roissetter, 1869 in Falmouth. Is this a sibling, someone else entirely, or did she change her name?

Cheers,
Jo
