You could also try Outpost Firewall...it's free and does a brilliant job.....Zone Alarm is a bit resource hungry...

You can get it here:-

Hi downside  :D :D , being an oldtimer I had actually read bodger's post prior to posting (having been kicked into shape by the oldies) but decided that mine was not  quite , answered by his question, but I do agree that they were near, in content.

Hi bodger - hope we are holding hands with the info  :D

Thanks Michael72 I appreciate the thought, but I'm a non geek  ::)

Hi Wendi

In my experience you should definitely uninstall Norton BEFORE trying to install any other system.

I use Grisoft's AVG free antivirus system with which I have had no problems - you can download it yourself from http://www.grisoft.com/doc/1

Best wishes

Ticker

I too have downloaded AVG, and although it is working just fine, I keep getting a warning that it's only a trial and after so many days I will have to buy the full product.

Have you paid for yours Ticker, or are you able to always use it for free?

I used to use Norton but although good found it slowed my PC down a lot especially boot up times it runs in the background and takes up a lot of working memory, fortunately my broadband provider supplies a complete live protection package including antivirus, spyware, pop, up privacy and parental controls and so far has worked brilliantly.
PS beware I recently got a virus from an email pretending to be from one of my trusted sources that once opened disabled my anti virus of the time ( norton) making really had to get rid of

Actually there is a fair difference between the two.  For example the pro version updates far quicker than the free version.  Secondly the paid version as many mirror sites for updating the definitions whereas the free one as only one which does on occasions cause problems when there as been some down time.  Personally I use AVG but I don't feel secure with it. In fact I have twice had to remove viruses that it as let through the door but these were fairly new ones.

The other problem I have found with AVG is its constant false positives especially in programs such as the Java Virtual machine.  This can be sorted by unicking the Heuristics scan though.

As for Windows Firewall mentioned elsewhere.  It is not as good as one would believe.  I have managed to get access to a friends pc when running windows firewall ( yes with his permission) and there are far to many loop holes in it to be secure.  I would suggest Zone Alarm as a free one but if you have the cash spare a good hardware firewall is the business.

I think on that point I will hush up because it is going to get far to technical for every day users.  One final thing though for those of us using XP it is advisable to allow the pc to update the windows security automatically which will close one or two loop holes as and when Microsoft accept they are there

Hi Wendi

Alby has highlighted someing called 'phishing' (pronounced fishing) in which you receive an email from a respectable company like a bank and it asks you to enter your PIN number/password and other details.  Usually they say they are contacting you from the banks Security Department.  In general nothing can protect you from this except common sense.  If it comes from a bank where you do not have an account then it is wise to be suspicious.  If it comes from your own bank then you have to resist the temptation in replying to it because logically your bank already knows your PIN number or password.

ANTI-SPYWARE.  If you have Internet Explorer then you probably have Windows Defender running on your system.  You might want to download Spybot Search & Destroy and run it from time to time as a stand alone program just to see it picks-up anything Defender leaves behind.  Since they are both free (in the true sense of the word) then you have nothing to lose by having both of them on your system.  Windows Defender runs all the time though, so it is using up resources, memory and processor time.

INTERNET SECURITY.  Although Internet Explorer has a built in firewall it doesn't actually prevent websites trying to access your PC.  Zone Alarm has been mentioned, it is resource hungry, but it is free and reliable.

ANTIVIRUS.  I too use Norton AntiVirus and I did renew my subscription last time around.  It seems to be getting more expensive every year.  If you do not renew your subscription Norton flashes up reminders (intimidating messages)on a daily basis until you do renew.  I suppose we are all trying to get something for nothing but someone, somewhere has to be paid for writing and providing antivirus ware.  As long as you stay out of dodgy websites and don't open suspicious emails you might be lucky and not get an infection.  I can't recommend an alternative to Norton or Mcaffee as I haven't tried any of the free ones.  I'll keep an eye on this space though when my subscription comes up for renewal later this year.
