Changing security suppliers ?
« on: Saturday 10 June 06 13:47 BST (UK) »
My Norton is due for renewal, and having had probs with it during the last year was considering downloading Kaspersky Internet Security 6.0, instead.

Two questions for your comments please,

Would it be sensible to remove Norton prior to downloading Kaspersky, and if so, do I just use the uninstall, or will bits of Norton be lurking elsewhere?

Does the whole idea fill you with dread, and you have a better idea ?

My piece of kit is V important to me, I'm aware that there are a lot of good, free, antivirus & firewalls out there, but being a computer dumb dumb, thought it would be better to pay for an all in package, that would (hopefully) run itself  :)

Hi Wendi

In my experience you should definitely uninstall Norton BEFORE trying to install any other system.

I use Grisoft's AVG free antivirus system with which I have had no problems - you can download it yourself from http://www.grisoft.com/doc/1

Best wishes

Hi Wendi... just thought I'd say that I second what Ticker says ..I've used AVG now for the past 4 years and have never had a problem/virus  - you can also set it to automatically update which is a great feature.  It is free which is a bonus.  The AVG menu is very easy to navigate also and very easy to use also.    To uninstall Norton - I believe from memory there will be an 'uninstall' option when you open the folder you have saved Norton in originally....

Best of luck and kind regards, Karen

Thank you both for your replies, I will be taking your advise.

Does Grisoft's system give me everything I need, firewall as well? - I really don't understand all this terminology   ::)

Wendi

I use Windows XP and its built in firewall seems to meet my needs.  Are you using XP?

Best wishes

Thank you Karen  :)

Ticker I do use XP, and obviously I did not know it had a firewall built into it  ;D  I just knew that you needed both.

So I will uninstall my Norton and install Grisoft and stop worrying.  But seriously, thank you for your time and advise.

I think this thread should be merged with Bodger's topic but in the meantime here is the link explaining the differences in what certain products do.

Hi. downside, & others. I use Windows XP, and following " dowside's " link i installed Avast!, free home kit, very simple and already it's working well, i also have , spybot, and i notice when using  other Gene Related site, it informs we that it has blocked some thing each time i click on to another page, this can be annoying  when navigating, can this function be dis-enabled, ie just the pop ups, not the search & hold ? bodger
