That's brilliant, BF.  Thank you so much.  I knew he was a shoemaker from my father's birth certificate, but it's great to see it confirmed and actually in the Derry Almanac.

For the timescale around 1900, the Registrars office in Londonderry should be able to track down a marriage certificate for you.

Thank you Scotmum and Maryderry.  I do actually have a copy of William McDaid and Rose Kelly's marriage certificate.  They married in 1900.  From this I have found out that William McDaid was from Buncrana and his father's name was Denis.  I believe his mother's name may have been Biddy Doherty.  However, I can't seem to get any further than this.

Hi Mary,
I got some information through GenesReunited about Rose Kelly and, if this information is correct, believe her parents to have been Patrick Kelly and Peggy Duffy.  Her father's name was given on her marriage certificate as 'Patrick Kelly, farmer'.  I think that Owen Kelly and Annie McKinney were his parents, although I have no way of double-checking this.   I think Rose Kelly was also from Buncrana.  However, I know nothing more about Denis McDaid - William's father - apart from the name and that he was from Buncrana.

The place on the marriage certificate is the residence of the groom at the time of the marriage which may or may not be the place he was born or where his family were living. For example, if William came to Buncrana to work his residence would be listed as Buncrana.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thanks Aghadowey.  I have been in touch with a second cousin who has also been trying to trace the family tree.  He had discovered the link with Buncrana, so I do believe that William came from Buncrana to Derry and set up his business there.  However, there seem to be a great number of 'McDaids' in Buncrana!
