For the Croydon area there is no local registrar index online as well to double check, though you might wish to contact the local registrar and see if they would search their records for a possible birth.

Up to 1875 though it was compulsory to register births there was no actual punishment for not complying so some births were not registered. This would particularly apply to travellers. It was more likely they would just have their child baptised than registered as well. Copies of Croydon parish registers will be at Croydon local studies library and also at Surrey County Archives in Woking.

Do you know if he used an alias at all

Who were the witnesses to his marriage - can you place them

I Know these are not what you are looking for but they may help.  Have you looked for your Deighton/Dightons at  Mitcham also as Travling familes often went to both.

All off the above were at St.Saviours Church, Croydon
