Hi Good Life

There is a christening on the IGI for a John Walker Christening:  29 JUN 1834   Breedon On The Hill, Leicester, England which is close to the Derby border, father Joseph Walker Mother Elizabeth

Hope this helps

Thanks Jan

I forgot to add that John Walker is listed in Census being born in Ripley Derbyshire.

Is Ripley near there?

Hi.

You would need to access the parish registers.

Mellor is in the High Peak a long way from Ripley...

It is doubtful that Breedon on the Hill is his place of baptism...as in the period you are looking at  the concept of 'settlement' arose. Anyone 'settled' in a parish had a right to relief from it, and others did not. So it was important that they were baptised in their place of birth.

Ripley was originally a township in the parish of Pentrich. Ripley All Saints was built in 1820 and the chapelry assigned 1821. It became a seperate parish in 1855.

Two thoughts which may be complete red herrings.

For a first birth especially, the girl sometimes went home to mother and the baptism would be in the wife's home parish even though they lived elsewhere - could that be the case with John and either Mellor or Breedon on the Hill was where his mum came from?

Second thought - do you know if the family were Methodists - I see there are several baptisms of Walkers in the Ripley Wesleyan Methodist Circuit listed on the IGI. Can't see your John son of Joseph, but there are other children to a Joseph and Mary from 1842 - perhaps John was baptised earlier than the IGI records as it seems only to include records from 1838 onwards.

May be no help, but...

Hi.

I don't know if you have this but there is only one Joseph WALKER in Ripley in 1841 with a son John.

HO107/190/2 folio 69

Ripley.
Joseph WALKER aged 40 Coal Miner. "Y"
Mary WALKER aged 35 "Y"
Elizabeth WALKER 12 "Y"
Fanny WALKER 10 "Y"
John WALKER 7 "Y"
Joseph WALKER 3 "Y"
Mary WALKER 3 "Y"
Twins if the ages are correct...!!!

"Y" = Yes to the question if born in County. All ages for adults over 15 were rounded down to the nearest 5 or 0.
