Hello Biker

This is my first posting.  I was interested to read about your book. My great uncle James William Hearn worked for the Gas Light and Coke Company at their Bromley By Bow Works in east london. He served with the Royal Berkshire regiment, he won the Military Medal and Bar and reached the rank of sargent. He was killed in action on 17th May 1918. His name appears on the memorial plaque in the gas works. I don't have a photograph of him, I would be grateful for any information on James if you can help.

Hello Biker

My grandfather (Ralph WILLSMER) and granduncle (Norrie WILLSMER) worked for Gas Light and Coke. .. is there any mention of either of them please - probably not in the Armed forces, but as employees.
Thanks a lot
Caroline

There is a photo of Sgt J W Hearn on page 6 of the 1919 Co-partners magazine.

If you send me an e.mail address I will send you the file with the whole book.

He will also be mentioned in the memorial booklet for the service at the Royal Albert Hall, but I cannot find the disc with the info on it at the moment.

Regards

Pete

Caroline,

Each book is several hundred pages, and there are 6 of them.....

If you pm me an e.mail address I am happy to let you have copies - I only have the ww1 years though, if you could narrow the years down it may save you some eye-strain!

Pete

Thanks for the reply Pete, I didn't realise there was so much to look through.  I thought perhaps there was an index of sort.  My grandfather and two of his brothers worked there and I have them on at least the 1901 census and Horace (Norrie) also worked there and went up to executive level, and I know my grandad was quite high up too, but they will be too early for WW1.   To be honest I don't know why my grandad was not in the First W.War now that I come to think of it - or maybe he was?  (I didn't know him)

Is it only people who served in the war mentioned in your book?  My grandad and Norrie (at least among the brothers) worked there all their working careers.

How do I send you my email address?  Do I just put it on here?

regards
Caroline

Hi

The books cover everything, social, sports, promotions etc etc,

If you click on my name it will take you to the contact section - just go into the send a message option - we have a slight problem in that my e.mail is limited to a max file size of 25mb and each book is bigger than that, so I need to find a way of sending them to you.

The books are are review of each year though, so if they were there prior to 1914 they may well not be mentioned in the ones I have.

Thank you very much for sending me a copy of your book on disc.
Also for all the time and effort you put in to trace my family members, dispite the wrong information from me.

Always a pleasure, especially to be able to provide photo's as well as info.

Its a shame I only have a digital copy of the books as one pdf, if they were individual photos of each page they could be hosted on photobucket and much more easily accessible.

Also, would be nice to have digital photos of the memorial panels showing names, to go with the info.

Think I've seen them on photobucket somewhere, will have another look when I get a mo'.

Hi Pete

in all the years I've worked on the Bromley site I've never taken a photo. So it's about time I did.
There's not a lot left of the old site, but I will take what I can. Some old gas holders are there and then the dock where the boats came in, empty of water and one half filled in. There is of coarse the memorial and a column with a gas lamp still burning on top.
I will let you know when they are taken and send you copies.
