Hi Alan (and Sarah)
Well, I never did get round to asking my 1C1R for more on the Mantachs - really just a passing interest cos John b ab 1816 (IGI has chr 22 Jul 1815 Rothes, James Mantach & Jean Inch) married my GGG aunt Anne ROSS, younger sis of my GG gfa Donald ROSS. Altho both sibs born in Bourtie, Abdnshire, this was the beginning of the ROSS tribe settling around Knockando & Boharm. And of course an unusual surname is tempting . . .
Altho I had death date of John Mantach's death, I had not seen cert, so thank you for that, good to have parents and see connection (your MANTACH GGGG grandparent had a sibling who married my GGG aunt - agree?). Kinda fits naming tradition, but all common forenames.
Do you have James MANTACH & Jean/Jane INCH in Brick St in 1841 Census (with Ann, George, John (age leap to) and Alexander)? And in 1851 in Breich St (poss mistranscription of Brick St?) with George, Peter, Ann (age 29, so first Ann might have died or lied) and a grandson Alexander age 6. If not, they are on FreeCen.
"My" John b ab 1816 is at home in 1841, Green St 1851 with wife + first 3 children, still there 1861 but 2 eldest children not (James poss a cattleman at Glen of Rothes), just John age 14 & Thomas age 8, not found him in 1871, but still a Gen Lab age 64 liv Green St with Ann in 1881. John d 1889 as you say, but his wife Ann (my GGG aunt) is still at 12 Green St in 1891, a 76 yr old washer woman with grandchildren Annie 18, Thomas 9, Jane 6; these are the 3 of the 5 children of their 3rd child Thomas MANTACH b 1853 who mar 1875 Dunfermline Elizabeth DUFF. Thomas b 1853 was a Cabinet Maker and seems to have moved about; although I have him with family in London in 1881 census, can't find him in censuses Sc nor Engl after that. In 1901 Census my GGG aunt Ann (died 1906) is still at 12 Green St with only Jeannie/ Jane Calder MANTACH) age 16, gdau.
Got a wee bit more, and think I have been in touch in the past with someone else interested in MANTACH, but sorry, that has not been filed away.
Have you looked at Moray libindex? there are 79 MANTACH entries there (without soundex). One caught my eye, a John MANTACH (1811 Dundurcas -1900), parents Peter MANTACH & Annie GERRIE - there are obituaries in 3 local newspapers. I've ordered up newspaper articles from them in the past for another line, very reasonable £1 each plus postage, swift response. One obit I got not only had a photo, but also names of children AND the four pall-bearers with their relationship to deceased - new info to me. So you might get lucky with the Mantachs.
Hope this is of interest.
Best wishes, Buzzy
