coroners reports, Newpapers?1890,s

Hi can anyone tell me where i could find access to the above. One of my gt gt grandmothers Mary Ann Wigley(nee Smith) I was told killed herself not long after accidently lying on her baby and strangling it. Apparently she came home from work very tired and lay on the sofa with the baby next to her. She fell asleep with the babies hood caught under her, the baby slipped off the sofa and was strangled. This must have been very tradgic for her and the family, even more so later when she killed herself.
I want to find the above records because i have exhausted other records trying to connect her husband John Wigley with Wirksworth where he says he was born in several census. I have looked on the Wirksworth site. Maybe a funeral notice would have family members i can connect through? I have found a possible Mary ann died 1899 Ashton ,on freeBDM and a baby Thomas a little earlier same place. I dont think the death certs would help me much though.
Any help would be appreciated, I have them on the 1881 and 1891 and by 1901 John is a widower.

Hi Mike,

that is a very sad and tragic story.

Most inquests were reported in the newspaper. If you have an idea of when Mary Ann died you will be able to get a copy of the inquest from the local library.

Like you I am in Austraila and managed to get two inquests for 1882 & 1901 - from Tameside Library. They didn't charge me a cent - just posted the photo copies of the newspaper.

Both reports are lengthy and I was amazed at the details given. I even know what the family had for supper.

Hopefully you know the area where Mary Ann lived so if you contact the local library and give them the details they can check for the newspaper report.

Hi Mike,

if it's Tameside you are in luck. I can't praise the staff there highly enough.

As well as the inquests they found a great deal of information for me about pubs in Staleybridge where my great grandfather was licensee - best of all they found the burial place of my great grandmother.
 
I can highly recommend Tameside.

The death certificates would give the date of the inquest. They would also give the cause of death. The date of death and inquest would be helpful to the library willing to look up for you.

I doubt the report of the inquest would help with connecting your man to Wirksworth. Does his father's name on his marriage certificate not help?

Hi everyone I did manage to connect John to Wirksworth,thankfully. Havent got the certifictes for death yet,though,a bit slack on my part.
