Lost in Ince
« on: Friday 22 October 04 19:28 BST (UK) »
???  HELP!!!!

Does anyone out there have access to an old map of the Ince in Makerfield area circa 1870?

I am looking for the location of the birth of my Ggrandfather but after months of searching I am more confused than ever.  The details on his Birth Certificate state that he was born in the Hare & Hounds Inn, Rock Farm, Ince, Sub District of Hindley, Registration District of Wigan.

I have been able to locate Rock House in Ince but this does not ever appear to have a farm attached.  There is a pub in Hindley called the Hare & Hounds but I am not sure if it is old enough.

Can any kind soul please give me directions?  :-[

No map, I'm afraid, Des, but I wondered if you had seen this thread on "Wigan World"?  Long story short, not an "official" address but seems to have been used by various people registering life events.  https://www.wiganworld.co.uk/communicate/mb_message.php?opt=f1&msd=444055&offset=&subject=ROCK%2520FARM

In the 1881 census, 104a Warrington Road is noted as being "Hare & Hounds Yard". (William Reeves, iron puddler). Enumerated immediately following Ince Cemetery Lodge.

There are two Warrington Roads! One goes through Ince in Makerfield and Rock house is located on it. The second starts in Wigan as the B5386 before joining the A49. In the 1845 map it is marked as the Warrington and Wigan Trust but would have been known simply as Warrington Road.

It is on this road where the Hare & Hounds Inn was located just west of where the Hare & Hounds Yard was located at 104a Warrington Road. The Inn, itself, was located at Lane End.

The Wigan Directory 1869 - Lamberhead Green, - Richardson Isaiah, Hare Hounds Thwaites’ delf.

A large swaithe of the land to the west of Rock House would have been farmland, probably belonging to owners of Ince House but named after Rock House (rather like "Home Farm"). This would have been gobbled up by the industrialization but with the historic name remaining.

Basically, this means a birth location of Rock Farm could be any of the farm cottages on that land. If the birth was in one of the hamlets I feel sure that it would have been recorded as such.

I have attached three maps. The smallest scale shows the proximity of the Hare and Hounds to Rock House (about 2km as the crow flies).
