9th battalion Northumberland Fusiliers
« on: Thursday 01 June 06 00:07 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have a book presented to my grandfather who survived the 1st world war and his brother who didn't and is at Arras. It is:

Historical Records of the 9th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers by Captain C H Cooke MC 1928

It was published for private distribution by the council of the Newcastle and Gateshead Incorporated Chamber of Commerce to commemorate the services of ...with 'B' Company of the 9th (Service) Battalion Nothumberland Fusiliers 1914-1918.

I am no expert but if any look ups are required please send a post.

Jane

Hope you offer for a look up still stands. My grandfather Herbert Taylor was killed 15th April 1918 It would appear that he served in two sections of the Northumberland Fusiliers on the Medal card I have ref Reg T.R/5/No 56860 and then underneath No 40617.He must have joined at the earliest late 1915.I am just trying to find out which battle he may have been killed in.

If you dont get a reply i would try the National Archives and see if the 9th NF War diary for that date is available either online to download or to send off for.It should give you where they were and what they were up to on that date.Usually cost about£3.50 for a few days worth.

Dear Jane
I wonder if I might take you up on your offer to look up information relating to the 9th Battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers. I looking for information on my uncle John George Lawrence (but listed as J.J.Lawrence in the 1916 newspaper report announcing he had been wounded).  He was a private from Tyneside.  I know nothing about his role subsequently but I know was taken to a Red Cross hospital in Belper to receive treatment for his head injuries.
Whilst the book may not contain a reference to him specifically it would be helpful to have some idea about the actions the battalion was involved in in 1916. I'm afraid I don't have a more specific date.
Regards
Danny (from Nottingham too)
