my ellis family again
« on: Wednesday 31 May 06 08:57 BST (UK) »
can anyone help me please. I have just found I am going up the wrong tree as they say.

I know my ancestor William Eliis married Mary Wainwright in Woolley Yorkshire in 1818 They had 7 children. I think William died in 1833 aged 48. Certainly the 1841 gives Mary a widow with 3 daughters I know to be my family. Also Their son William was a lodger aged 15 living in Barnsley which is correct with my later history

Ok so far. My problem is that I thought William was the son of Matthew Ellis and Sarah Wild but having recieved a letter from a very kind person from the Wakefield family history society and is decendant from the above family it appears I have the wrong William.

I Think my William died aged 48 in New Miller Dam, which  would make his birth about 1785.
Matthew and Sarah's William was born about 1780 so that is my problem. It now leaves me to try to find my William's parents. can any one help please as I dont have much to go on

Hi Janet,
Reading your posting on William Ellis prompted me to look in the Ecclesfield parish registers I have (these are scans of original) as there are several entries which you would expect to be in/around Barnsley. I think that family ties of one kind or another often resulted in baptisms etc in Ecclesfield parish, as it is on the border. The following entry has me puzzled as I have never heard of "Reinstork" in Ecclesfield parish, or anywhere else come to that. This entry is on the IGI and I think their transcribing is correct as far as I can make the original handwriting out. It is 16 April 1786, William son of Thomas. If you haven't yet solved your "brickwall" perhaps you might have some idea of where Reinstork is/was. I wondered if it was entered in error for Royston. Regards, Doreen.

Hi Doreen
many many thanks I think you may have solved my problem. I will need to follow it up of course. My Ellis family moved to Barnsley. William's son William is on the 1841 census at the age of 15 living in Barnsley as a lodger, but the rest of his family are in New Miller Dam.
William junior married in Barnsley and eventually moved to Doncaster.
I have no idea where Reinstork is but I think Royston is in the right area which is a better bet but again thank you.
regards Janet

Hi Janet, I do hope it works out for you, and I'm pleased if I have been of any help. There are some Ellis' in the Ecclesfield registers and I'll make a note as I come across them. If you want anything specific looking for just let me know. regards, Doreen.

Hello Doreen.
I have been rather short of time over the last few days, but I managed to find the William you suggested on the IGI. I also found a George Ellis born about 1783 also Reinstork. There does not appear to be such a place and I am now almost certain it is Royston. As I know William junoir was baptised in Wooley and looking on the map it is in much the right area. I have found Royston website and it also gives Ecclesfield parish and all the villiages in the parish and again it seems to fit. If you find Thomas Ellis and Elizabeth Smith in registers and if they had any more children it would be a great help to me. I hope I can help you in return one day. I live near to Lincoln if that is any help. regards Janet

Hi Janet,
And I now live near Spalding! How we get around the country when researching, although my family is Barnsley based and my husband's is Sheffield. I do have some Coxon rellies based around Lincoln, Nettleham who I'll have to trace back one day; if I ever manage to sort my Bradfield/Ecclesfield lot out! I'll make a note of the Ellis' I come across, and I know I've also seen them in the Bradfield registers. In the Ecclesfield ones it could well be the interpretation of whoever wrote in the entry and earlier or later ones might give a different abode other than Reinstork. I'll make a point in looking for the family when I have a little more time, some entries are very hard to read and some are impossible. How do we exchange e-mail addresses, other than on an open message board? It would be easier but I have had problems with spam after posting on one site. Regards, Doreen

Hi again. Well what a small world. I live just up the road from Nettleham about two or three villiages on.
I dont think there is any other way except to put emails on the post but I am happy to give you mine. I get so much spam mail anyway so bit more is not going to make much difference although I have to say it drives me mad.
so Email address removed by moderator to prevent spam - please contact by personal message

Hi Janet,
could you do me a favour? When you are searching for your Ellis's,
could you keep an eye out for any info on a family(s) with people named Lister Ellis, James Ellis, Francis Ellis and William Ellis possibly in the same family c.1780. My Ellis's were from Dewsbury, Bingley and Bolton by Bowland areas.

Many thanks,
                      Lister
