Work back from yourself finding dates of birth and marriages of children. If you know when the eldest child of your gt. grandfather was born you then have a rough idea of when the marriage would have taken place. You can find births, marriages and deaths on ancestry.co.uk.
Local newspaper would have covered Mayor Making, also the local council where he was Mayor would have details in their archives.
