Isaac HAWKINS born cir 1830
« on: Monday 29 May 06 16:21 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me find Isaac Hawkins who married Ann French in Whitestaunton on 24/12/1851.  The marriage certificate states that his father was John Hawkins deceased.  Isaac is said to be a labourer.  I also have the following details:-
1841 Census.Possible found in Dalwood aged 13 a Ag. Lab. living with a William Newberry, a yeoman.
1851 Census.
Found living in Whitestaunton aged 20, a Ag. Lab for a James Hawkings. ( NO known relation).  His place of birth is given as Chard.
On 25/12/1859 Isaac died aged 33 in Dalwood.  the cause of death was decline.
Isaac and his wife had 3 children.  John born about 1854 although I haven't been able to find his birth certificate.  However Wambrook church record the baptism of John Hawkins the son of Isaac and Ann on 26/05/1854.  The other children were George born about 1857 in Whitestaunton and Ellen born about 6 months before her father died in Dalwood.
I would be very grateful if anyone could give me more information about Isaac particularly any details of his baptism and marriage.
Thanks.  Mary

On 24 Dec 1851 at Whitstaunton there was a marriage between Isaac Hawkins, x, 20, bachelor, labourer, resident of Whitestaunton, father George a labourer; and Ann French, x, 19, spinster, resident of Whitestaunton, father James a labourer. Witnesses were George Tutcher & Grace Samson.

Isaac & Ann had a daughter Sarah Ann who was baptised at Whitestaunton on 21 Mar 1852:  abode was recorded as Holey ( a part of the parish of Whitestaunton, Isaac's occupation a labourer. Then on 29 Sep 1856 son George was baptised.

A further possible child of Ann's is Tom Hawkins baptised on 25 Mar 1866: Tom described as baseborn; mother Ann described as widow, living at Holey.

Ann French appears as an 8-year old in the 1841 census returns for Whitestaunton, at Holey, with parents James & Mary (both recorded aged 35 but subsequent censuses suggest they were 37 and 38)) and 4 siblings.

Hope this helps a little,
Jenny

Thanks Jenny for your information.  The son Tom Hawkins was definitely the son of Ann, Isaac's widow.  Ann married again after Isaac's death to a Richard Mutter on 03/07/1870 in Yarcombe.  In the 1871 census she has a son Tom Hawkins aged 5.   He is on the census as son in law but I guessed he was Ann's illegitimate son.  Thanks very much for confirming that for me and giving me the date of his baptism.
I didn't know at all about the daughter born in 1852 and she isn't with Ann in the 1861 census so perhaps she died or is living with someone else.  I shall have to check it out.
One thing I am confused about is that you say Isaac gives his father as George a labourer at his wedding.  I have the wedding certificate where it states that his father is John Hawkins deceased.   Did you get your information from Church records?  I have drawn a total blank looking for Isaac's father John,  should I have been looking for Isaac's father George?
Thanks again for you information...you've given me new hope of finding Isaac's parents.
Look forward to hearing from you,
Mary

Mary, I must apologise about the name of Isaac's father. I have a spreadsheet of Whitestaunton marriage transcriptions, and in reading across I 'jumped' a row, and quoted "George" in error. As you have, so do I: father was John (deceased).

Thanks Jenny for coming back to me so quickly.   Could you check a couple of facts for me if you have church records open in front of you please.
1. Ann had yet another illegitimate daughter who appears in the 1871 census as Mary Ann Hawkins aged 7 born Dalwood.  Can you find her baptism?
2. I have been on free BMD since your first email and have found a  death certificate for a Sarah Ann Hawkins in the Axminster district in the Dec qtr 1855.  Could you check and see if this is Ann and Isaac's daughter?
3.   Finally , and if you only have time to do one thing this is the one I most want!  Can you look and see if there's any record of Isaac's father John Hawking's death pre Dec 1851, and Isaac's birth about 1830.
I really have been at a dead end with the Hawkings family for several years and it would be wonderful to go back another generation.  I know church records are the answer but I live in Bedfordshire so I really appreciate what you have done for me.
