old barges

hi
anyone have old pictures of the barges or the men that worked  them ,liverpool/leeds canal ,my family were bargees fron runcorn.

Hi Twigg,
Have you looked at the web-site for the Ellesmere Port Boat Museum. In their collections they have a picture of "George" a Leeds & Liverpool Canal short boat. She is only 62 feet long and was designed to work between Wigan and Leeds where the locks were also only 62 feet long.

They have pictures of various canal vessels, just a case of establishing which particular type of "barge" you are looking for.

If you can't find what you want in their gallery, try an email to the archivist.

what years are you looking for 1800's 1900's some of my ancestors worked the canals as well,so i will have scout round for you.Dont hold your breath though these boat people and boats are hard nuts to crack

hi celia so your family are boatmen two,
mine are as far back i think 1700 late
my father was arthur twigg  1910 married jane martin
his dad was william 1882 married florance ashley
his dad was john 1857 married jane e smetham
his dad was george its george i am stuck on dont no nothing about him carnt get birth records of his kids so carnt get mothers maiden name only that was elizabeth i carnt fined a marrage for the as thy moved that often  thy were all fron cheshire  thy were mainly born on boats that why i dont think thy registered and mybe george was not married
so he is my brick wall waiting for birth records of james son of john so i am hopeing thank you for your time twigg

If John Twigg wasn't born till 1857 (where) Have you got him on the 1861 census with his parents. Daft question really as you wouldn't know where he was would you I have had a quick look on the 1837 registers and there are 2 John Twigg
and 1 John Twiggs registered, Utoxeter (Hope thats spelled right it's hard to read) Barnstable, and Barnet. The January 1/4 seems to be missing for1857 you have probably seen those anyway. When i asked for years, roughly, i had meant for the barges If you havent got the family on the census i am sure someone will oblidge.

There are other photos on site as well although not your boats - how did you find out the names of your boats - never thought that was possible - even though I found one of my lot on "a" boat on the river Lea in Hertfordshire in the 1841 census!!

i always new my dad s boats were lizzy and edna bate as he called my sister after the edna
did you ever come across an old boatman called harry vaughn he died about two or three years ago at the age of 83 he was my dads cousin his boat was the maywin at one time he made a ty vidio about life on the canals ,so sorry i have not seen it one of his family has it maybe you have i think it was for bbc tv .regard
