Henry HIGGINS and Harriet Sophia HIGGINS nee SEYMOUR
« on: Sunday 28 May 06 03:47 BST (UK) »
HI

I am trying to trace Harriet Sophia SEYMOUR b.1840 /1841 in Henley, Oxfordshire. In 1861 she is a servant living in Isleworth. I do not have the exact address.

Some time in the late 1860's I think she married Henry HIGGINS from Hounslow.
Their first child Eliza Mary HIGGINS is born 1870 in Surbiton, Surrey.
Please could some one look this family up in 1871 census.

The only other information is from the 1881 census. Then Henry and Harriet HIGGINS are living at 7 Hope Place, Kingston On Thames, Surrey with children Eliza Mary, Arthur Thomas, Alfred George, Annie, Harry and Rosa.

I do not know where this family is in 1891 or 1901 censuses.

Many thanks for any help or suggestions.
Helen

Hi Bryan

Thank you for the look up for 1871 census. :)
Henry and Harriet married earlier than I realized because I did not have Harriett Seymour HIGGINS.

She was not at home in 1881 census - she is a general servant for the LOVESAY family in Lambeth, Surrey.

Also it is interesting the occupation of Henry. In 1881 he is a boot and shoe maker. I wonder what he is doing in 1891?

Many thanks for your help. :D

Hi Linda

Thank you very much for the 1891 census. Thank you for confirming that they had a daughter Alice.
They were at 7 Hope Place in 1881 and I think that they will be at that address in 1901. All the children were born in Surbiton, Surrey.

I do wonder where the older daughters are? Harriet Seymour HIGGINS is in service in 1881, so I assume that she is still in 1891. Query she married in 1895 to someone EDWARDS?
Eliza Mary Higgins married in 1892 to George BEEKS from Hampton, Middlesex and I had expected her to be at home.
The other daughter, Annie I am being to think that she may have died because I can only find her aged 4 on the 1881 census and no where else.

So thank you for answering some of the questions about this family.
Many thanks
Helen

Eliza Higgins is in service in 1891 in Surbiton - she's been transcribed as born in Norbiton. The address is Argylle House, The Avenue and it appears to be a school - she's a housemaid.

Henry and family in 1901:
8 Richmond Grove, Surbiton Hill
Henry Higgins, Head, M, 57, Bootmaker, Own Account, at home Hounslow
Harriet Higgins, Wife, 60, Henley on Thames
Ernest Foster, Lodger, S, 20, Milk Carrier, Surbiton

No sign of Harriet, Edwards or otherwise. No death found for Annie.

Hi Linda

Thank you for the look up of 1901 census. I was surprised that the two younger daughters Rosa - aged about 21 and Alice aged- about 19 were not at home. According to family they were still in Surbiton, Surrey.

May be they were working for someone in Suribiton and they were there that night of the census. ???

I think that their son Arthur Thomas HIGGINS is in Surrey but not in Surbiton.
Query he becomes a fishmonger and now in 1901 he is married.

Thank you for your help.

Helen
