Sighthill Cemetery - another photo Pls COMPLETE
« on: Sunday 28 May 06 02:07 BST (UK) »
I too would desperately love a photo of my family's headstone in Sighthill Cemetery, Springhill which opened 1840.

Here's what I've got:

Purchased Double Lair 103/104
Lair Owner John Crum, 409 St Vincent St, Glasgow
Certificate No. 90000200 & 90000201
Section 8 No 103 &104 F

Burial Date, 4 Oct 1871, Sect 103 F
Agnes Crum, Burial No. 90000490, Aged 79

Burial Date, 1 Oct 1887, Sect 104 F
John Crum, Burial No. 90000489, Aged 70

Burial Date, 14 Feb 1922, Sect 104 F
Lillias Crum, Burial No. 90000492, Aged 67

John Crum was my gt.grandfather, Agnes (ms Brown) was his mother and Lillias was one of his spinster daughters.  I don't know who is in the other grave - it may be his 12 year old son Allan McKenzie Crum or if I'm lucky it will be his wife Jane (McKenzie) whose death record sometime in between 1866-1871 I've not found.  I've come to think his eldest son also called John died when he was about 20 as I can't find him on any census.

The Cemetery dept doesn't have any other Crum info and the archives can't help with the death record.  I have an idea earlier John Crum family tombs are in Calton.

I'd greatly appreciate a photo if possible.

Hi Dave,
Yes, I'm definitely still interested and I'm thanking my lucky stars the letter about my father's paternal line caught your eye.  I've replied on your Sighthill thread.
Thanks a million

Cheers,
Rena

Hi Rena,

I know I'm poaching on Dave's territory but today I decided to venture along to Sighthill.

There is no Section Map anywhere that I could find so it was just a case of wandering about. Not that I'm complaining, I had a lovely afternoon.

I came across, quite by accident, a ratherer impressive Crum stone. Whether it's any of your ancestors . . . . . .

The MI reads:

"Erected by John Crum, Stationer, Glasgow in memory of his beloved wife Jane Mackenzie
Born 23rd April 1823, died 2nd July 1867
Also of their children
Donald Mackenzie born 9th March 1858?, died 6th September 1893?
Allan Mackenzie born 8th April 1866, died 1st August 1878
The above John Crum, born 12th May 1817, died 28th September 1887
Also his son John Crum born 29th September 1851, died 8th May 1879 at Tarkastadt, South Africa
Also his daughters
Annie Mackenzie born 28th May 1856, died 22nd April 1906
Jane Mackenzie born 1st May 1859, died 24th November 1910
Jessie Mackenzie born 8th February 1861, died 26th December 1912
Agnes Crum his mother born 23rd April 1792, died 2nd October 1871
Thomas Crum his brother born 28th September 1818, died 25th September 1871
His eldest daughter Lillias Crum born 15th June 1854, died 10th February 1922"

If the above lot aren't yours, it's a remarkable co-incidence that both your John and his daughter Lillias's age and date of death match so closely with the people listed on the stone.

Wouldn't life be wonderful if everybody's gravestone had as much information on an entire family, covering three generations, as this one

If you want copies of the photos - PM me with your personal e-mail address.

I've just gone back and re-read your original post - I now think this family must be yours!

Too many co-incidences for it not to be.  ;D

That's great Anne.  Brilliant result.  Why not post 1 or 2 photos here too.

Hello Ann,

Can you pass the box of tissues please  :'(

After years of searching for records this is wonderful new.s Thank you so much.  There are even more baptisms and death dates missing than I knew about. And I've actually possibly come across the South African death record but didn't think he was mine.

and now I know why my father was baptised Donald MacKenzie.

I can't tell you how grateful I am that you took that walk. I'll definitely be PMing you

I didn't take any general photos - that's for another day.

I was actually looking for CWGC graves and believe it or not, after driving round the length and breadth, then walking around for a couple hours - I couldn't find any!

I had looked on the CWGC Cemeteries search page and noticed Sighthill wasn't listed but I thought it was maybe listed under some other name. My plan was, if I found at least one, I could then find out what they had listed Sighthill under. Plenty of men on family stones but all the ones I found were killed/buried abroad.  ???

The first photo below, is Rena's Crum Family and the second one is James Murray, Garnkirk Works (died 10th February 1851 aged 47) and family.

The mystery of the absence of any CWGC stones in Sighthill has beel solved!   ;D

Sighthill Cemetery closed for burials in 1954 and at that time, CWGC heastones were removed from the actual graves (in both Sighthill and the Southern Necropolis Cemetery) as they could no longer be properly maintained and re-located in Glasgow (Eastwood) Cemetery.

The stones are grouped in a small garden of remembrance.

A photograph can bee seen here: http://www.cwgc.org/CWGCImgs/Glasgow%20(Eastwood)%20Cemetery.JPG

There may, or may not be family stones still in existence in Sighthill.

Proves the point that a wee bit more research should be done before jumping into the car and heading off on an adventure. Still, I'd never have found Rena's stone if I did everything 'by the book'

All the men buried in Sighthill (92 of them, all WW1) are listed in the CWGC database under Glasgow (Eastwood) Cemetery but there is no indication as to the original location of the stones.
