Stow & a Death on the Railway

My g-grandfather's elder brother was killed whilst working as a railway guard in Stow in 1876-killed instantly when he fell between the wheels of a train.
He was single,22 & lodging with a fellow Guard in High St Portobello John Young who reported his Death.
Does anybody know which Train Companies would operating on this line at this time?Where is/was the railway line in Stow in 1876?
Would there be any kind of record of this accident?
Any suggestions as to his burial place.The family were all young when orphaned & I wonder if his siblings knew whether he had been killed or not-if in fact they remained in touch. There are no family stories of a death on the Railway which I ma sure there would have been if they  were aware of it. I know the other sibs did all living fairly close to each other.
He was born before civil reg-1854& my GGrandfather in 1856 so one year out on both! The details of his parentage was very detailed & I wonder if employers would have kept a record of your parents at this time?

The railway through Stow (opened 1848) ran between Edinburgh and Galashiels and was operated by the North British Railway Company.  By the date of the accident the line had been extended southwards to link up with other railways at Carlisle.

This accident doesn't seem to have been reported on by the Board of Trade, whose inspectors investigated major railway accidents, but it might be mentioned in the NB Railway Co's minute books - now held at the Scottish Record Office, Edinburgh (West Register House).  If it is mentioned there, the details may well be very brief, and confined to some such remark as "£5 awarded for funeral expenses."  If the NBR's staff records survive (I don't know if they do, but if so they'll be in the SRO too) there may be some basic details, but probably nothing about the guard's family.

Will look this up, I did a complete study of Stow some years ago and have every article printed in the local papers, there should be something there.

sorry nothing reported in the local papers, Stow was in Midlothian then so you may find something noted in the Scotsman

If he resided in Portobello then he may have been buried in the Cemetary for that area, it is situated on Milton Road in the area of Joppa, you might be able to call them and see if he is on record there.
