William and Mary Brook Kirkhamgate
« on: Thursday 25 May 06 20:19 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me I would like any information about William and Mary Brook of Kirkhamgate Wakefield.  Mary Brook was a shopkeeper and died in 1859 aged 89 years, she had been a widow for 20 years.  Her unmarried daughters Hannah and Harriet lived with her, after her death they lived with their brother James Brook  a widower, also of Kirkhamgate.  In her obituary it said that Mary had nine children, we only know of these 3. I would love to find out the names of some of the other children.

Hi,
I believe Mary & William Brook of Kirkhamgate are my 4x Gt Grandparents.  Their daughter Eliza Brook born 10.5.1805-1862  married William Crawhaw 1813-1844.  Their son Joseph Crawshaw, my 2nd Gt.Grandfather was living with Mary & her daughters Hannah & Harriet & son James on the 1841 Census.  Mary Brook was a shop keeper in Kirkhamgate.  You say Mary & William Brook had 9 children.  Can you tell me how you know this and who was William Brook?  What did he do etc.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Regards.  Fiona

Hi Fiona,
William and Mary Brook were my 4 x great grandparents their son James (brother of Eliza) was my 3 x great grandfather. I have an obituary for Mary Brook that was in the local newspaper that gave me a lot of information (I have been researching my family tree for 15 years). I also have found the graves of William and Mary Brook, their daughters Hannah and Harriott and many other family members. If you would like to pm me I will help you fill in missing information.
Kind regards Susan

Hi Susan,
I only found this rootschat yesterday when I saw yr message on google.  What is a pm ?  I am very excited about yr news & looking forward to hearing more.  I checked again the 1841 census and saw that another little boy called John Kirk aged 5 was also with my Gt Grandfather, Joseph Crawshaw and have worked out that it is Eliza & James' sister's little boy who was also at his grandmothers, Mary Brook.  So we have another child of William & Mary called Jane Brook born Wakefield 1809 who married John Kirk.  I didn't find a James.  I'm also interested to know about the father, William and what he did etc.  Are you on Ancestry ?
Kind regards, Fiona

William and Mary Brook were my gt.gt.grandparents through Eliza Brook their daughter.  Through census information etc. I have found 6 children - i.e.James, Harriet, Hannah, Jane, Eliza and William all born at 2 or 3 year intervals from 1792 to 1809 except William.  This last child was born in 1820 Alverthorpe, and Mary would have been 49 years old - not impossible but I wonder if he was really a grandchild.  In your message you mention an obituary and 9 children.  Does it mention any of them by name and particularly William.  If he is her son then it's possible the missing children were born in the gap between 1809 and 1820.  I haven't been able to find William and Mary's marriage but from an age point of view I would guess that James was their first born.
I did find that Jane who married John Kirk had 10 children.  James and William also had children.
I would be grateful if you could let me have the details from the obituary and whether you have found their marriage.
Margaret
