James F. Nowlan - Ireland to USA - 1850
« on: Thursday 25 May 06 02:00 BST (UK) »
I am searching for the family of G G/Fa James F. Nowlan, who immigrated to USA from Co Wexford in 1850.  He met & married (1862) Irish lass Margaret Ann Redmond, & they raised their family in Richmond, Henrico Co, VA, USA.  James was a stonemason by trade, as were 3 sons & other family members.

I have found a christening of James Nowlan on 5 Apr 1840, in Inch by Gorey, to parents Thomas & Sarah Nowlan.  I found a marriage for Thomas Nowlan to Sarah Gilbert, on 22 Mar 1834, in Inch by
Gorey.  I do not KNOW if these two events are connected.  Appreciate any help available.     Thanks, Bob [Chatsworth, CA]

I just came across this site and your inquiry.  I am one of James F. Nowlan's great-great grandsons.  I actually have formal portrait of both he and Margaret in my home and also have a pretty through history written by my great-aunt Francis Nowlan Love.  Would love to exchange any info to help fill out the story.

Dear Robert,

I'm thrilled that you got this message.  I guess that makes you a very distant cousin.  From James Francis Nowlan and Margaret Anne Redmon Nowlan, my link is through James Francis Nowlan Jr. and Meta Budd Grundman Nowlan.  They had 6 children - Albert, Charles, Theresa, Paul, James Calvin, and Francis.  My grand-father was Charles Bernard Nowlan.  He married Annie Jo Butler and they had one child - my father, Fagg Bernard Nowlan.  My father was born on March 14, 1923 one week after his father, Charles Bernard Nowlan, died from tuberculosis.

Since I've concentrated more on the line from James to James, Jr. to Charles - I don't know much at all about the other 8 children from James Sr. and Margaret, which would include your line from Joseph Alphonzo Nowlan.  Where did that name come from?

James Jr, Meta, most of their children and my father are all buried in Greensboro, North Carolina - which is where I live.  I had an older sister Margaret Ann Nowlan, who died in 2000 at the age of 53 and I have an older brother, Fagg Bernard Nowlan, Jr., born in * and then there's me, Richard Scott Nowlan, born in *.  I have two daughters and one grandson.

The bit of history I have before James and Margaret came to Virginia supports your earlier post.  So Thomas Nowlan and Sarah Gilbert are James' parents and I have a record that Margaret Redmon's  mother was Mary Cullen (b 1817) and that her grandfather was Patrick Cullen, (b 1794).  Why I have that but not her father's name I do not know.

Look forward to learning more!

Scott Nowlan
