McPHERSON - research from Australia

Hi,

I'm researching my McPherson line from Sydney.

Duncan McPherson b. abt 1842, Argyll married Mary O'Donnell in Sydney, Australia on 18 Nov 1873.  I don't have any immigration details on Duncan.

His parents were Duncan McPherson b. abt 1803 Argyll and Mary (maiden name unknown) b abt 1805 in Argyll.  Any information about these McPhersons would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Carol if you go to" www.bdm.nsw.gov.au" then to "Family History "then "online historical indexes" you will see the record of the marriage there. You can also search death and birth records as well, and order certificates. Aussie certificates usually have more info on them than UK ones.

Carol,

Do you have Duncan's death certificate as it may have more details (including he mother maiden name) and will definitely tell you what year he migrated.

You may then find the immigration records give his mothers maiden name (depending on the type of immigrant he was and where and when he arrived).  He may also have immigrated as a child with his parents in which case you may get lucky and get their parents names.

A quick search of the NSW BDM (assuming he died in NSW) shows a couple of possibilities (but you will have to order them)

One quite close and Sydney

others remote but possible
16805/1932  MCPHERSON  DUNCAN  DUNCAN  MARY  REDFERN    (Sydney - and he would need to have lived to 90)
17716/1934  MCPHERSON  DUNCAN  85 YRS DIST HOSP  ALBURY  ALBURY   (Country NSW - and he would need to have lived to 92)
12849/1896  MCPHERSON  DUNCAN  UNKNOWN  UNKNOWN  BATHURST   (Country NSW - couldn't see a death for Mary McPherson in Bathurst)

The other death records have different parents names.

The other approach you could take is www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk.  They have the parish registers and statutory registers indexed.  It is a pay site, but you can view some of the images to the records online also.  These will probably be in the old parish registers but you may be able to find his christening or the marriage of his parents to help you on your way.

I have Duncan's death certificate.  Born in Argyllshire, Scotland. He died in 1871 at Ultimo, (Sydney).  It lists Colin McPherson as his father - a farmer.  His mother is not listed.  Duncan's son, Daniel, was the informant.  States time in the colony as 27 years and 11 months.  Spouse - Mary McInnes.

I found his grave at Rookwood Cemetery.  The headstone is very weathered - it also lists the following buried at that location:

His wife Mary d. 9/7/1876 aged 78
Flora Thornley (daughter) d. 7.2.1879 aged 41
Henry George Thornley b. 1/1/1864 only son of the late Henry George and Flora Thornley, d. 22/9/1898.

That's what I have to date :-)

I may have some information about Duncan McPherson for you. I have a Duncan McPherson who died at Albury District Hospital in 1934 born in Glasgow 1849, married to a Jean McIver. He immigrated to Australia in 1881. They had a son, also Duncan born in Wandin Yallock Victoria in 1883. He is my Grandfather. It doesn't look like we are talking about the same family, my McPherson's were in Sydney with no links to VIC. I haven't done any research for some years and am not currently working on my tree.
