1841 and 1851 Chorlton
« on: Wednesday 24 May 06 11:17 BST (UK) »
Could some kind person please look up the following address in both 1841 and 1851.
I have a birth there of a John Joseph Fildes in 1844 and would like to know who was in this house at the census dates.

94 Loyd St, Chorlton upon Medlock - this is how it was spelt on the certificate LOYD

I am hoping for some Fildes or if not Moores but would like to know who was there in any case.
Thanks in advance,

Claudia

Thanks Sheila,
This IS the father of the John Joseph I was talking about - the "John Fildes, Stockbroker" has proven it!!
By the way, the sister listed - is it Eliza Fildes, therefore never married?

Thanks again, I did not have 1861 for this family!!!

Hi Claudia

I cannot find this family in 1851 although parts of the 1851 Manchester census were water damaged and this may be the reason.  Also I've had no luck with 1841 so far.

I have the 1841 discs and have trawled Loyd Street (the spelling is correct) but cannot find and Fildes or Moores.

Some people on Rootschat do have access to the water damaged section so may be an idea to ask for a look up on this.

Good luck.

Sheila

Hi Claudia

Slater's Directory for Manchester & Salford 1850 is very useful for tracking down people in the water damaged census pieces.

John Fildes sharebroker, 21 Marsden Street, house 108 Bloomsbury, Rusholme Road, C on M

There are a surprising number of Fildes in the directory with activities ranging from merchant  James Fildes of Horsfield, Fildes & McKinnel, Cheetham Hill to Robert Fildes, bleacher!

http://www.historicaldirectories.org

I haven't got the C on M disk myself, sorry.  Loyd Street is near Burlington Street apparently.

Good luck

Hi Claudia

Loyd St. does not appear on the 1851 Unfilmed cd's, evidently too badly damaged. Sorry

There are plenty of Moore / Moores, do you require any in particular and which districts

Regards, Dave

Thanks SandraC for this.

Dave, it was actually the Fildes I was looking for as the Moores married into the Fildes family.  Thanks anyway for looking.

Hi Claudia. About 5 years ago you mentioned the Fildes and Moore families in a Rootschat post. My great-great-great grandfather John Fildes married Mary Moore at some time around 1840, and she died quite young: by 1861 he was a widower living with his children and older sister. His daughter Mary married my great-great grandfather John Wintringham, a solicitor in Grimsby.

I'm trying to find out about Mary and also about John's early life: who their parents were etc. I know John's parents died while he was a boy, and that he worked in a calico printing factory at Broughton Bridge as a cashier. Later he became a stockbroker and in the 1860s briefly MP for Grimsby.

Do you have any more information about them? I'm not a very experienced genealogist, but I think I've looked in most of the obvious places, and I'd be very grateful for any suggestions you may have.

Best wishes,

Caroline

Hi Caroline,
I moved over to NZ this year so all of my files are still parcelled up in the garage!!
I will try to find out what I have but I am not (as yet proven) directly related to this line.
Bear with me, it may take some time....
